Actually, I think this is dreadful.

Volunteers are being asked, amongst other things, to welcome maternity patients, support women in early labour alongside midwives, change bed linen and support meals for women undergoing fetal monitoring.

These are vital tasks on a ward and should be done by clinical support workers (or housekeeping for bed linen). Relying on volunteers makes for chaotic wards and communicates clearly that these are not seen as core and valuable aspects of patient care: they are.

Pay a support worker and don't roll out nonsense just because you can get it for free.
