EU officials are calling to strip the IOC of its European funding after it reinstated Russia's Olympic Committee.
Estonia will propose excluding the IOC from EU funding programs, including Erasmus+.
"It is impossible to understand decisions that seek to bring aggressor countries back into international sport as if nothing had happened," Estonia's culture minister said, and the EU's sport commissioner signaled support: sport "cannot become a back door for normalizing aggression."
The 7 July IOC decision paves Russians' way to the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Ukraine's sports minister called it an "alarming signal" and asked federations to hold their bans.
Ukraine needs Poland as much as Poland needs Ukraine.
The russians have been very successful in creating a rift between the two countries in the past weeks. Their only major success in a Summer full of failures in prosecuting their war.
I have decided to stop fanning this rift with my comments.
I love Poland but I support Ukraine first because they are the ones doing the actual fighting against an enemy that wants to destroy both countries.
UEFA is refusing to readmit Russia, which means that, for the time being, there will be no Russian clubs in the Champions League and no national team in Euro 2028 or World Cup 2030 (since the qualifiers are held by UEFA).
England, Germany and France are steadfastly against. ✊
🇭🇺 PM Magyar: Let me make it very clear concerning the war in Ukraine, on behalf of Hungarian government, that Ukraine is the victim, Russia is the brutal aggressor and Ukraine has the right to defend its territorial integrity. We maintain our humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
Disgusted to see this decision from the International Olympic Committee. This is the first step down a slippery slope to letting war criminal Putin allow his doped up athletes compete in the U.S. under Russia’s flag. Glorifiers of war crimes shouldn’t be allowed in the Olympics at all, let alone allowed to compete under their own flag.
@United24media@agazeblank@iocmedia There have to be consequences.
▪︎ russia must remain banned.
• The corrupt decision-makers at @iocmedia must be removed, and the organization must be completely reformed.
• Europe and its allies must impose a total boycott.
@iocmedia What a shame!
As you posted this message, the very russia that you’re about to sports-wash knowingly and deliberately targeted civilians in Ukraine with its ballistic missiles. Murdering innocent Ukrainian children weeks on end
A surprisingly rational point from the U.S. administration. You don’t hear that every day, so let’s take note of this rare moment.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged the obvious:
“I think what you're discussing is the ability of Ukraine to reach deep inside of Russia and conduct strikes. I think that's one of the dynamics that's changed in this war over the last few months, and that is that Russians are finding it more difficult to defend their own airspace.”
“We hope this will create space for negotiations to end the war. It is an escalation, but at the same time, such an escalation could help bring it to a close.”
Trump echoed this sentiment, calling the strikes on oil refineries an escalation capable of bringing peace closer.
Well, congratulations on finally understanding the simple truth we’ve been talking about for years. It is not “de-escalation” or appeasing the aggressor that brings peace, but strength. It is precisely when the cost of the war becomes unbearable for the Kremlin that Moscow suddenly starts talking about “negotiations.” This is no coincidence. It is cause and effect.
The conclusion for Russians is simple. It is in your own best interest to end this war and get out of Ukraine as quickly as possible — while you still have oil refineries and factories that haven’t been burned down.
The Ukrainian Defense Forces, for their part, will continue to diligently work toward peace — methodically, night after night, target by target.
