"Ocean nomads or island specialists? Culturally driven habitat partitioning contrasts in scale between geographically isolated sperm whale populations"

One year ago today (yes, NYE!) @_fvachon and I plus 3 crew set off to deliver a certain Valiant 40 from Hampton VA to Antigua. Buckles were swashed. We made a short video every day and are reliving the passage - follow us south! #ThrowbackThursday#Sailing Day 1: Departure
Our latest paper! 🥳
We find the ability to track relationships between distant items in an acoustic sequence, an ability critical to syntax + language, is widespread in primates. It therefore likely predates language itself by 30-40+ million years!

We are happy to share our preprint investigating the mechanisms underlying how populations adapt to novel environments. For this, we study parallel adaptation of bottlenose dolphins from pelagic to coastal habitat across their range using 57 whole genomes. https://t.co/aEo1SrUK8K
Congrats to Pernille Tønnesen et al
on their cool paper where we for the first time have recorded prey echoes from tags on sperm whales, showing that they employ long range #echolocation@AarhusUni@AzWhaleLab@_SMRU_#dtag

I pledge to continue opposing racism and hate, including systemic racism in science. And to do this work everyday, beyond social posts like this. (Thanks @sgero ) Whitehead lab join me ! @anaeguiguren2@jr4science @deepdivewhales @taylorahersh
Thank you @UWI_StAugustine and @MarkFHulme for inviting me and @_lrendell to share our research! For those interested in sperm whale distribution and culture the recorded seminar is now available🙂 *Please do not cite without permission, results are preliminary and unpublished
#Biodiversity2020 An excellent day to remember how many cool species of bats help us every night out there, and how much we need to conserve them! This is just an example from the #Amazon@InsideNatGeo@mcngranollers
I'm delighted that the covid19-delayed @UWI_StAugustine seminar by @_lrendell and @_fvachon on The Distribution and Population Structure of Sperm #Whales in the #Caribbean will now go ahead online on Thursday 21st May. Can't wait! https://t.co/gkGEfZr3MB
Excited to be a part of @InsideNatGeo#ExplorerClassroom Tuesday May 12th at 2pm ET for their special programming for learners in PreK-Grade 2.

Large fat reserves (i.e. body condition) are crucial for baleen whale survival and reproduction. Our latest paper shows that the North Atlantic right whale is in poor body condition, which is likely contributing to its current population decline.
We have a paper out today in Proceedings B - "Acoustic coordination by allied male dolphins in a cooperative context". Why is this interesting? See thread 👇
