Is there really any point to Eid?
What is the cause for rejoicing in this Great Eid of the Sacrifice (Eid, after all, just meaning ‘a recurring celebration’)?
In submitting to God’s command to sacrifice his son, our master Ibrāhīm, peace be upon him, really lived, rather than paying mere lip-service, to the fundamental truth that the Eternal Source of the finite must always take precedence over the finite; even when it means sacrificing that which is a part of our very being.
But when God allowed him to sacrifice a ram in Ismail’s stead, He showed us that mercy is the governing Divine attribute. As long as we participate in that mercy, via the peace through submission that is Islam, by recognizing the primacy of the eternal and infinite over the temporal and finite, God ennobles us.
He affirms the integrity of our being in this world, lifting the burden, and allows us access to that Divine bliss without the need to sacrifice that which is most precious to us.
That is, when we "give" God all that we love by showing our submission to Him - because we know that everything we love was only conferred upon us from the spring of God's Eternal Generosity - He gives all that we love back to us in His mercy, no longer as harmful attachments that come between us and God, but as signs of our love for Him and His love for us, and as means of closeness to Him, filled with baraka and true joy.
And what could be a more fundamental cause for celebration?
The Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ said: "A time will soon come upon us when the nations shall summon one another to war against the Muslims, just in the manner in which people invite one another to share their dish." Someone asked: "Will that be because of our small numbers at that time?" He replied: "No, you will be numerous at that time: but you will be the foam and detritus borne by a torrent, and Allah will remove the fear of you from the breasts of your enemy, and cast feebleness (wahn) into your hearts." Someone asked: "What is wahn?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied: "Love of this world and abhorrence of death."
The scum borne by a torrent (ghuthāʾ) is completely insubstantial; it is parasitic on the torrent, and has lost its proper situatedness, wholeness, and value. In the same way, the modern Muslim is hindered by two broken wings of insubstantiality.
1 He is typically subordinate by default to Western cultural criteria and assumptions, but unlike the actual Westerner, remains devoid of the conviction and vigour that the Westerner enjoys in virtue of his embeddedness within, inheritance of, and contribution towards the underlying cultural dynamic and impetus of his indigenous culture. As such, occasional exceptions granted, the modern Muslim subsists at a scientific, literary, philosophical, everything disadvantage when it comes to competing in accordance with the Western criteria of the Civilization of Liberal, Universal Modernity, Neutral and Scientific (which is of course "not-Western, just Modern" according to so many of you).
And, 2 He has typically failed to inherit the knowledge, evaluative criteria, and spiritual apparatuses of his own Islamic civilization, in anything more than an extremely confused, fragmentary, and inadequate way. He lacks real respect for, or understanding of, his own heritage, instead seeking to bestow dignity upon the Islamic past by offering it a bit-part "Golden Age" by which it "contributed" to the narrative of Western triumph via science and technology, before of course falling into deep backwardness and darkness shortly after "passing the baton" of civilization to the West in the late Middle Ages. And what is blind, utterly subservient worship of science and technology other than the very "love of this world" that causes spiritual feebleness?
In the political realm too (as well as so many others besides): Demand for "fair treatment" in the international arena, when we lack any vaguely respectable negotiating position or clout because of our almost total political and indeed cultural subordination to those to whose "fairness" we nonetheless appeal. Scarcely anything better epitomizes the miracle of this hadith, or indeed, ghuthāʾ ka ghuthāʾ al-sayl.
In the mid 90s, the late Sayyid Muhammad Alawi al Maliki rh held classes in Makkah, at the end of one of these classes a man that we will never know recited a poem imbued with intense longing for the Prophet ﷺ, I translated it.
It’s as if you are listening to something ancient.
“Do not bind yourself to a friend by taking a wife from his family; do not sign a contract with him. We have never known these two acts to result in anything but rupture, where ignorant people would expect the ties of friendship to be strengthened.”
—Ibn Hazm
Imām Aḥmad Razā Khān Barelwī (1272–1340 AH / 1856–1921 CE) writes:
“I say: Rather, none knows anything in reality except Allāh, indeed, nothing exists in true reality except Allāh. And the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him, declared the truest statement ever uttered by the Arabs to be the saying of Labīd:
‘Lo! Everything besides Allāh is false.’
It has been firmly established among us that the phrase lā ilāha illā Allāh has layered meanings:
(1) Among the general believers, it means: There is no deity worthy of worship except Allāh (Lā maʿbūda illā Allāh).
(2) Among the elect, it means: There is no ultimate aim or objective except Allāh (Lā maqṣūda illā Allāh).
(3) Among the elect of the elect, it means: There is none truly witnessed except Allāh (Lā mashhūda illā Allāh).
(4) Among those who have reached the furthest end, it means: There is none truly existent except Allāh (Lā mawjūda illā Allāh).
All of these meanings are true.
The foundations of faith rest upon the first. The criterion of righteousness lies in the second. The completion of spiritual wayfaring is attained through the third. The very essence of arrival (wuṣūl) is realised in the fourth.
May Allāh grant us a plentiful share of all of them, through His grace and generosity. Āmīn.”

Sayyidunā Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jīlānīا (رضي الله عنه ) taught that the nafs passes through 7 stages — from the commanding self to the tranquil, content, and perfect soul — and that tazkiyah is achieved through sincerity, remembrance of Allah ﷻ, and obedience. Interesting…
One of the most profound passages I’ve ever read from a scholar isn’t a matter of ilm, but Imam al-Razi’s final pages on Surah Yusuf, where he reflects on the loss of his son
A moment where the voice of the theologian falls silent and the father’s heart speaks

No one seems to understand this weird American Muslim coalition going on, so let me summarily explain it:
Zohran isn’t a jihadi, an Islamist, or even a serious Muslim by any stretch of the imagination. It’s abundantly clear from his own repeated statements and explicit upbringing that he’s a secular, far leftist, unserious diaspora moron who even to the most moderate of serious Muslims is a ridiculous heretic (him being Shia is a whole other story, but it’s never brought up because he’s so unbelievably secular that his Shiism is the least controversial thing about him).
He enjoys a symbiotic relationship with the nominal American Muslim political world who, for the most part, know all of these things about him but ignore it on purpose because when it comes to politics they’ve learned that pragmatically propping up the guy that will grant you unlimited gibs works out way better than being principled puritans who vote for the guy that believes the same things you do. All of these photo shoots and tours would still be occurring even if Zohran was a Druze, some weird Ismaili subsect that believed they were reincarnated into dragons, or anything really.
All that matters is they know that Zohran knows that each don’t care about what each of them believe, it’s what they can do for each other.
The unspoken agreement is that, to NYC Muslims, Zohran can suck as much troon bussy as he wants so long as he doesn’t block mosque construction and says Free Palestine for emotional catharsis. To Zohran, he doesn’t care how hardcore believing NYC Muslims are so long as they vote for him. It’s just that simple. There is no hidden Islamist agenda, there’s no deep Marxist philosophy, none of that. It’s just pure ethnic politics and pragmatism that they, funnily enough, learned was the only way in the Trump era.
Iraqi hadith scholar Bashar Awad, who recently released his critical edition of Tarikh al-Tabari, completely destroys the common talking points of hadith rejecters

Imam Badruddin Ayni says, "Love of the Prophet is the essence of faith, as were it not for him, faith would not have even been known".
Imam Ahmad Rida Khan expresses the same sentiment when he says,
"Quran to imaan batata hai inhein,
Imaan yeh kehta hai meri jaan hein yeh!"

Another pipsqueak Emirati propagandist, slandering and blood-libeling the Sudanese people while blaming the crimes of the UAE-sponsored RSF genocidal militia on the Sudanese Army. The criminal regime of the UAE believes that using a woman for propaganda is "empowering".
Honour culture didn't vanish. Instead, it got outsourced to the nation-state and markets. In that shift, men who still want traditional values and roles in their houses can't lean on cousins, neighbours, or village customs. They need an internal code, and in the West, that code is usually religion.
Back home, the custom carries your household even if you’re irreligious, which is why many men can afford to mock clerics and religious folk whilst still being conservative with their women.
In the West, only conviction can carry this, so men rediscover religion if they want to preserve these norms without resorting to harsh coercion and violence, which often backfires as the legal system is not in their favour.
That's why the sons of men who shrugged at religion back home reach for it in the West, as custom is gone, and conviction is all that's left.
Our parents were absolutely right in pushing us towards STEM or wanting us to be materially successful (or attaining prominence even in non-STEM fields). The question is what one directs those material efforts to—this was absent from both their minds as well as the minds of those who do pursue material success. Even in ‘Ilm, all ideas are devoid of ambition and one is tied to whatever has been produced prior with no intent to continue what has been passed down to us in any of the Sciences. Knowledge is invaluable, but the importance is also paradigmatic. Which has the most value would be dependent on which problem it intends to solve and how crucial the problem is in the given paradigm. That a different paradigm exists appears to be anathema to many minds.
