I have encountered similar thoughts from many doctors before, but this is the first time I see someone posting it online, unfiltered. I call this the Topper’s Curse. It has several components

1. Equating marks/grades with intelligence
2. Equating lack of marks / grades with with lack of intelligence
3. Expecting linear relationship between marks and income, disregarding other variables
4. Find out that the relationship is in fact non linear
5. Feeling dejected that the society didn’t give them what their parents / society always told them they would get if they follow a set of rules
6. Seething at the apparent injustice of the five-point-someones overtaking them
7. Failing to realise that their premise(follow rules ➡get marks ➡medicine ➡money) and therefore their entire life is a lie
8. Blaming the winners instead of gracefully accepting they fell for well-intentioned advice that didn’t work out

A topper is so used to being numero uno, that it seeps into his identity, his very sense of self. Parents and society drill this into his head everyday. When he finds that he can’t get to the top, by simply working harder, that the success equation he believed in is broken, he suffers a crisis of faith. That crisis of faith manifests itself as a sense of betrayal.

There are two solutions :

1. To realise that there’s a component of randomness in the success equation. Call it luck, destiny or divine will.

Talent + Hardwork = Success ❌
Talent + Hardwork + Luck = Success ✅

2. We don’t need to be very rich to be happy. We just need to be rich enough to do what we are good at. Purpose can be a substitute to paisa. This is perhaps where spirituality / religion comes in.
