Lately, I’ve been thinking about two quotes:
"Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times." – G. Michael Hopf
"Do not pray for easy lives; pray to be stronger men." – John F. Kennedy
It feels like we’ve been stuck in the "weak men, hard times" phase for a while now. But changing tides suggest a chance to reset – maybe even skip ahead to a period of good times.
Hopefully we all embrace challenge and resilience instead of always looking for the easy (and consequential) way out. 🇺🇸🇸🇪

The tip of the regulatory iceberg might seem focused on Auto OEMs, energy companies, SpaceX, and similar industries/companies. But as @chamath points out, the bulk of regulations lies beneath the surface, disproportionately affecting retail businesses. Employee licensing requirements, local permits, and lengthy approvals stiff-arm rapid location ramp and constrain labor markets. We've painfully felt this in the massage therapist labor supply over the past five years.
Urban markets bear the brunt of these challenges, compounding the impact. Deregulation could unlock immense value and trigger an economic sonic boom (great term by @friedberg) — retail sectors like salons and spas stand to benefit significantly from this unleashed potential.

@PauloMacro Sorkin only asks politically-charged challenging questions. Would be a new, safer day for investors / CNBC’s audience if he applied that same battling mentality to strategic conversations with the CEOs / investment managers on his shows.
Is RFK Jr.'s vision for health your vision too?
Vaccine opinions aside, RFK Jr.'s wellness vision could be a game-changer for #Beauty, #Health, #Fitness, & #Wellness. His push for natural, non-toxic ingredients and holistic living might not just be good for health but could stimulate growth for health-first products and services. As America gets healthier, these sectors will thrive. Check out the policies driving this shift:
1. Holistic Health Integration: He supports integrating alternative and holistic therapies into mainstream healthcare, encouraging a more comprehensive approach to well-being.
2. Eliminating Harmful Chemicals: Kennedy has expressed intentions to eliminate harmful chemicals and additives from food and consumer products, aiming to reduce exposure to toxins and promote cleaner living environments.
3. Clean Food Production: RFK Jr. has criticized the use of artificial ingredients and ultra-processed foods, advocating for cleaner food production practices that align with health-first principles.
Imagine a future where:
- Your beauty products are free from toxins
- Your meals are naturally sourced and nutritionally rich
- Your fitness focus includes yoga, acupuncture, and recovery wellness
As Americans embrace these healthier lifestyles, the long-term promise includes not only thriving wellness sectors but also a reduced strain on the healthcare system, paving the way for a more sustainable and cost-efficient health infrastructure.

@MattKuda Kick tracking and measurements just launched on FightCamp, integrating more monitoring tech into at-home workout/training equipment. It’s clear they still believe at-home fitness goes beyond recovery and detailed performance data particularly desired by users.

Totally - A ton of consumer interest right now.
I’d say that key current trends are:
1. Group personal training (Burn Boot Camp, The Yard)
2. Social wellness (Remedy Place, Peoplehood, Othership)
3. Experiential fitness (Brooklyn Boulders, The Bouldering Project)
Would put run clubs in its own category…
Generally, at-home seems focused on recovery (Plunges, Normatecs, etc). Sweathouz is catching a lot of the urban market for this though.
Trying my hand at a new project, Well Street, where I'll explore the dynamic health & wellness market. Here's our first look at boutique fitness M&A with [solidcore]'s acquisition by L Catterton.
🚀Exciting Market Moves in Boutique Fitness!🎽
[solidcore], known for its intense strength-based workouts, has been acquired by L Catterton, the LVMH-backed PE giant.
Here's the scoop: https://t.co/4AsbdfzNId
At the end of the day it’s still in the early innings. Both have a ton of whitespace left to grab (great for Solidcore’s new owner).
Looks like Barry’s originally wanted to sell itself but may have restructured instead (recapitalized - believe they had some rough terms on outstanding debt). Not 100% certain tho.
@elonmusk please purchase EA Sports, release a gaming controller (i.e., Luna), and let me play Fifa from the car🙏🏽
Until then, Beach Buggy Racing will have to do.
