@credenzaclear2 Goodness cannot be captured in calculation. It can often be approximated, and we need people who can articulate the limits of approximation! But we also need to remember that some of the best things in life (and the worst) exist beyond that limit.
@credenzaclear2 Not only that, but if dignity depended on ability or performance, then one person could have more dignity than another. The logical conclusion of that would be power worship.
Either everyone is included in the human family or no one is.
prediction markets in policy are bad bc they collapse three DISTINCT things (what's likely, what people believe, and what's right) into a single price signal, making it easy for a number to 'settle a question' that should still be reasoned out the hard way
Hey, brother; this is theologically misleading. That passage is saying that God is neither masculine nor feminine, nor anything else properly human, because God exceeds all human attributes. ‘Nonbinary’ seems to mean a human being who has some mixture of masculine and feminine traits, but does not ontologically exceed them
It is astounding how much spittle-flecked rage you can generate simply by saying that a war should not be started without proper legal authorization and unless there is concrete and realistic plan for ensuring that you don’t make things worse for populations of innocent civilians
@StephenM This is a straw man and a lie. The proposition was first priority to “protect,” not allegiance.
If you’re going to lie about a cheap line, at least quote the speech accurately.
I don’t follow hockey, but this had me tearing up. They brought their teammate’s (who was killed by a drunk driver) kids out onto the ice with their dad’s jersey to celebrate the moment. 🥹
Then state them, and show that they meet just war criteria (which include clearly defined and realistic war aims, and lawful authority, which in this case means congressional approval). The burden of proof is on the admin. Until it is met, everyone should oppose such an attack.
We need to rediscover the fundamental attitude of care as support and closeness to others, not only because someone is in need or is sick, but because they experience vulnerability, the vulnerability that is common to all human beings. Only in this way will we be able to develop more effective and sustainable healthcare systems. @PontAcadLife
@credenzaclear2 To be as charitable as possible, Anthropic seems deeply misguided, but "the Thinking Man's Four Loko" is not exactly something to aspire to.
I am glad to see that the egregious post has been taken down. As my brother bishops and I have said in our pastoral letter against racism: “Every racist act—every such comment, every joke, every disparaging look as a reaction to the color of skin, ethnicity, or place of origin—is a failure to acknowledge another person as a brother or sister, created in the image of God.” - Bishop Daniel Garcia, Chairman, Subcommittee for the Promotion of Racial Justice and Reconciliation
@credenzaclear2 Assuming being good is not something to gain?
Seems to me that enjoying being good to others is something to hope for. There is something radically real about caring when it is agonizingly difficult, tho, and maybe that truth can’t be argued for.
