Florida Boys by Josh Aronson
The work attempts to pose certain questions: what might a fictionalized, utopian Florida look like? When do young men, particularly ones from urban and suburban Miami, feel comfort and belonging in nature? What are the ghosts of Florida's past, and how do they manifest in its present, and so called imagined future? When can one use photography as a tool for envisioning fantasy and elucidating connections between bodies, landscapes, and ideals?
Bay Area! I'm doing a wholesome photo book night at SFMOMA next week. Bring a photo book you love to the museum and join me. Free with museum admission and open to everyone.
"Florida Boys - Countering hardness with vulnerability, Josh Aronson builds an alternate vision of boyhood unfolding against the backdrop of the Floridian landscape—one that incorporates gentleness and play." #VisualLiteracy#Photography#Storytelling https://t.co/57Z4K8Jxig

Florida Boys by Josh Aronson (2020–2025)
This series by Miami-based artist Josh Aronson documents groups of young men, many of which are first-generation Americans, as they travel through Florida’s range of environments. Merging documentary and constructed photography, the series explores identity and intimacy across swamps, dunes, rivers and beaches.
Aronson conceived the project as a response to Florida’s dual mythology of both paradise and decay, referencing both its colonial and contemporary histories. Through staged collaboration, Aronson depicts male friendship as both performance and escape, framing the Florida landscape as a site of vulnerability.
On the occasion of his solo exhibition Florida Boys at Baker–Hall, Miami-based artist and photographer Josh Aronson opens up about belonging, masculinity, and the Florida landscape — and how staging photographs of a fantasy world became a way of reimagining home. https://t.co/g4tsu5nDNf
