It’s the weekend so, yeah, the weather is unsettled yet again. Forecasters expect some showers and thunderstorms to develop late Saturday afternoon and into the evening. The forecast still carries some uncertainty, but a few storms could turn strong to severe, with damaging winds and heavy downpours that may bring flooding to some low-lying parts of the city, meaning some places will be potentially more affected than others.
We have been tracking this system since Thursday and agencies citywide are already clearing catch basins and getting ahead of the rain. Here is how you stay ready with us:
Have a plan. Build extra time into your weekend and expect travel delays if conditions worsen. If you live in a basement apartment, know your way out and where you will go. You do not have to wait for an alert to act. If your home floods often, stay with a friend or neighbor before the storms arrive.
Gather supplies. Always have water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, extra batteries, a charged phone with a backup power bank, and any medications you need handy, emergency or not. Basement residents: add a flood alarm, a packed go bag, clear exits, and keep your phone volume all the way up if you sleep.
Stay informed. Sign up for @NotifyNYC at https://t.co/KxYXYC4WKt for real-time emergency alerts. Basement residents can sign up for alerts made for you at https://t.co/Lx89m3wDQC. Keep watching your trusted weather sources all weekend.
We will be here around the clock. Look out for your neighbors, and let's get through this weekend ready.
