I just got off speaking at the special board meeting called for Edmonton Public School Board on the topic of suspending the School Resource Officer (SRO) program.
Here is the statement I delivered to the board.
Curious how 2 out of the 3 people who have defended SROs have been school administrative staff. It is almost as if the school system itself is implicated in systematic racism 👀👀👀 Sincerly, someone whose former viceprincipal threatened my immigrant status.
Trustee Ken Gibson voted against the waiver to reconsider the suspension of the SRO program. It needed to be unanimous. He was the only one to not grant the waiver. The motion to reconsider the suspension of the SRO program will be debated at the next EPSB meeting, Sept, 8, 2pm.
Imagine needing more information - everyone else had the time to do their jobs and read the data presented. Imagine being this lazy and narrow-minded. A request for information is a stalling tactic to back down from the public pressure to do the right thing. #EPSB
Secondly, how does he reason deploying procedure to tackle questions that bring procedure into question? To be exact, when the nature of the question is thoroughly and implicatively systematic, how does he address the systematic question through a part in that system?
The most immediate one: why was he not present at the first meeting?
I am curious, especially if he straight up refuses to debate the matter at hand altogether.
A summary:
The original vote to suspend the program would have passed if it wasn't for a racist trustee who has since resigned.
Now, Trustee @KenGibsonyeg - who was not present for the original vote - kills any opportunity to debate a motion that only failed because of a racist
Throughout two hearings dozens of citizens raised their concerns about the SRO program. They cited hard data, and personal stories.
Trustees have had years to investigate this program and to look into their concerns. Today's vote delays this long requested debate to September.

This is shameful @IT96. Two of your fellow board members are hiding behind protected profiles. Step up, and DO NOT evict these families, especially during a deadly and disabling global pandemic; this is cruel and inhumane, and the community won't stand for this injustice.

Why are you all hiding behind protected profiles @cdbruce214? Is it because you're ashamed of your actions? DO NOT evict these families, especially during a deadly and disabling global pandemic; this is cruel and inhumane, and the community won't stand for this injustice.
