My sister just tried to get her passport renewed abroad and she found out her NIN — the one that’s quite literally in her passport — is now no longer valid. According to a passport office contact, this is due to a technical issue integrating NIS/NIN. It’s affected some people’s NINs, not all.

So check yours and make sure you still have a NIN. A few people at my office found out their NIN isn’t coming up when they check.
