Our healthcare system makes practice unsafe and tough for healthcare workers. You are at a risk of bearing the burden of poor service and infrastructure of our healthcare.
If you have ever worked as a nurse, doctor or any patient contact role in a public hospital, you are likely running an NGO without you knowing; a percentage of your salary going to buying of gloves , medications and even buying dressing packs for patients. There are times you ask discharged patients to donate their unused materials, so you can use for other patients.
Other times , you find yourself acting as a surety for patients who need gloves, begging the ones with gloves and promising to pay back before the end of the shift . At times, you owe gloves and pay with syringes like it’s some stock exchange.
In fact, you’re likely to find yourself in the ward’s debtors book because you collected ward stocks in your name just to assist patients. This self-program is definitely not sustainable. How long can you go? How many patients’ burden can you bear?
Working in a public hospital means you are trying to save lives while trying not to lose yours from relatives pouring out their frustrations and anger . Of course, who do you want to explain to that there is no oxygen on the ward and they would believe you? You had better extract the oxygen from H20 if you don’t want to face the rage of relatives. How do you explain that the facility you work is incapable of caring for the needs of a patient and you have to do a referral and it doesn’t feel like they are being rejected?
This I would say is the medical version of you-go-explain-tire.
If you have ever been a ‘relative’ as a healthcare worker in another hospital, you would also understand the other side too: How frustrating it can be, especially that you are powerless where you are, saving others while you can’t tell the fate of yours in the hands of a bad system.
Sadly, you won’t find our leaders as patients In public hospitals , they don’t take their relatives there, so they can’t relate.
