We’ve been chatting to the public about AI and its impact. Do you agree with their thoughts? We want to hear from YOU! Take our quick survey to help our @utaw_uk better understand public concerns and hopes about AI: https://t.co/dsFia7aWEB
At #CWU24@DaveWardGS’s speech referenced the hundreds of thousands of tech workers in the UK.
Our branch’s strength makes the CWU the largest union representing tech workers in the UK.
The opportunity for further growth is incredible - time for us to take it! ✊
We're proud to see the outcome of @The_TUC's AI Working Group (which we fed into, alongside other unions), which announced today the Artificial Intelligence (Employment and Regulation) Bill. https://t.co/Dx4419l3Mu
There's a campaign claiming that you can legally stop paying tax to protest the war in Gaza, or even that it is illegal for you to pay tax.
It's obviously weird nonsense. But what's weirder is that the claim has its origins in far-right racist groups in the US.

Honoured to say that later today I'll be speaking on behalf of @UTAW_uk at #AIUK 2024 on the topic of "Data, Labour, and AI". Looking forward to a thorough discussion of how we tackle the deeply ingrained issues of worker exploitation in the Al field.

Workers in Google are being forced to set up and create infrastructure that’s being used to kill innocent people.
We spoke to @utaw_uk, on why this is an industrial issue.
Tune in at 7PM as we talk to Arielle Bennett @biotechchat and Eran Cohen from @UTAW_uk about the issues facing our tech members! https://t.co/ebKfFjfdFs
👏 A huge shoutout to Eran Cohen, a tireless organiser for @UTAW_uk, dedicated to the cause and making a significant impact. Eran's commitment inspires us all to strive for better in the tech world. Hear from him TONIGHT at 7pm on https://t.co/ebKfFjfLv0
We are thrilled to announce that Activision Quality Assurance testers located in Minnesota, Los Angeles, and Texas have voted to form the largest union in the video game industry under the umbrella of Activision Quality Assurance United (AQAU)
@alexhanna@gor_zilla A lot of unions are also consulting internally with members and writing protections for workers into recognition agreements as well as pushing back in the media against a laissez-faire approach on regulation
@gor_zilla@alexhanna We are in the UK but have definitely been very outspoken on AI in UTAW and the CWU! UK unions generally have been quite vocal imo, surprised to hear that might not be the case in the US
HAPPENING NOW: Protesters are gathered outside @Google HQ in Kings Cross, London to protest Project Nimbus, the company's £1bn contract joint with Amazon to provide cloud services to the Israeli state. Inside, @UTAW_uk members are flyering their colleagues.
UTAW’s @_Matt_Buckley talks about the crucial role young workers are playing to increase trade union membership across tech companies in the U.K. and reinforces the need for trade union education to be implemented as part of the curriculum across our schools and colleges 👏
Feel like this example could be used anywhere new tech (e.g. gen AI) is being used to "upgrade" long-standing processes and procedures tbh. Institutional knowledge as demonstrated through workplace culture and practices isn't always well-recognised.
good NPR episode about a hospital that tried to replace pagers with encrypted text messaging and failed
basically the encrypted texts meant the friction was so low to get a consult that people started bombarding the on-call residents and they essentially stopped responding to the texts
@CRMullins@nikillinit@rosikand Is there any particular app you use to do this? I've been using Pocket to store articles etc. that I'd like to read but adding summaries sounds super useful in terms of prioritising!
