The expected outcomes of our Health Sector Renewal Investment Program were carefully benchmarked on disability-adjusted life years (DALY) indicators, considering the rising percentage of vulnerable and physically challenged groups among Nigeria’s population.
The program aligns with Nigeria’s ratification and commitment to implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which guarantees the rights and fundamental freedoms of all persons with disabilities to respect and dignity in accessing quality healthcare. The Convention underpins a key pillar of Mr. President’s, @officialABAT, Renewed Hope Agenda to provide equitable and quality healthcare for all Nigerians as a matter of right and urgency.
On Tuesday, we inaugurated the Steering Committee for the Disability Inclusive Health Initiative, highlighting the barriers faced by people with disabilities when accessing healthcare in Nigeria.
With about 15-20% of our population living with disabilities, we aim to ensure that our efforts to provide an efficient, equitable, and quality health system do not leave out any citizen of our country.
The Committee will provide actionable recommendations on how we can better support persons living with disabilities by enforcing anti-discrimination laws and ensuring the rights of people with disabilities, especially as they pertain to healthcare, are upheld.
We value the insights from the SSA to the President on Disability, @AimohT, and other partners like the Missing Billions Initiative, @_missingbillion, and @McKforSociety. Their recommendation for a cross-ministerial approach to enhance healthcare access, provide assistive technologies, and implement rapid diagnostic services are crucial for supporting PWDs and other marginalized groups.
We also commend the ongoing efforts by @Fmohnigeria, @NphcdaNG, @NhisNg, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development @fmha_pa, @NcpwdOfficial and other government agencies to improve access to quality care, health insurance, and social welfare services.
Our shared commitment to promoting effective policies and boosting investments in targeted programs will address physical infrastructure challenges, eliminate communication barriers, and break down stereotypes that hinder PWDs’ access to quality healthcare and social welfare services.
