Today is the official 150th birthday of Glasgow Times.
Our first edition – when we were known as the Evening Times – was published on June 5, 1876, when the city was a very different place.
📢 One of my reporters is leaving the Glasgow Times after an incredible 4.5 years. This has created a vacancy in my live team. It is very much entry level, training on the job and suited to a reporter who wants to be on the breaking news live desk.
📢After 2 amazing years on the @clydebankpost I am moving over to the @Glasgow_Times!
I’ve loved reporting on Clydebank but I am thrilled to be joining such an incredible team of hard working journalists in the city🗞️💖
Applications for a new reporter on the Post are now live!
📢 I have an amazing opportunity for one talented individual to join my newsroom. We have had some internal promotions which will create at vacancy in the Clydebank Post.
This is an entry level job ideal for someone who is hungry to get their start in journalism.
We met Lamin Kongira yesterday to hear his eye-witness account of what he saw as the fire started. Asked why he ran into the shop, into harm’s way, he said, “It was my duty as a citizen in Glasgow to help my city.”
Lamin has asked me to share one specific detail with people: that he’s currently homeless.
He says he has been homeless for 6 months and is now living in a hotel. He told me he’s been in Glasgow for over 16 years now, and he used to work with Glaswegians from a horse charity who came to his country of Gambia. He came here and made it his home, but after his marriage ended he lost everything. He asked me to share this because although he doesn’t want any thanks for risking his life to fight the fire, he does want people to understand how widespread homelessness is now in this city he loves.
I'm looking to speak to anyone in Glasgow living above a vape shop who now has concerns about the safety of this following the Union Street fire for the @Glasgow_Times. Please contact me at [email protected] if you would be willing to speak
Tomorrow’s Glasgow Times features nine pages of in-depth coverage on the Union Street fire. Our front page is a unique one - a wrap- recognising the magnitude of this tragedy which will be forever etched on Glasgow’s history.
🎥 Crowds have gathered as a fire continues to take hold of a building on Union Street. Our reporter on the scene said loud bangs are coming from the building while firefighters attempt to put the fire out. Live updates: https://t.co/D0qNLPUany
A first look at our front page. I’m beyond devastated for everyone on Union Street. It is the heart of our city centre and this is just so sad. Thoughts are with the brave firefighters who are working so hard to get this under control.
The @Glasgow_Times launched a new series on youth work across the city today. It is the product of weeks of research and writing as well as the incredible input from a variety of local groups who do such a wonderful job. Please give the investigation a read if you can☺️
Today we officially kicked off our 150th anniversary celebrations.
It is a privilege to be the first female editor of the Glasgow Times during this milestone. read this newspaper since I was a wee girl and now I set the news agenda everyday for the title in 2026.
amazing to think we likely won't see another simultaneous lent, chinese new year, ramadan and disgraced member of the british royal family being arrested in our lifetime
