Correction, because it matters.
The "first paying customer" was me. I bought my own product to test the licence flow, and that is how the paste bug surfaced. There was no customer email.
The bug and the fix are exactly as described. The framing wasn't.
Two details worth stealing.
Strip all whitespace on a licence field: keys arrive wrapped across two lines in receipt emails.
Still refuse paste into disabled inputs, or you've just built a way around your own paywall.
Shipped the same day. He's still a customer.
If you have a panel injected into someone else's app, go test paste right now. The keyboard guard everyone writes doesn't cover it.

The fix: a listener on window, in the capture phase.
Window-capture runs before any document-level listener regardless of who registered first, so it doesn't depend on load order. Check composedPath() for your host, stopImmediatePropagation(), perform the insert yourself.
Nobody types a 36-character licence key.
I had tested the mechanism (can this input receive characters) and never tested the gesture. The test that mattered was "can a human get the key out of the email and into the box".
Paste is not a keyboard event.
TradingView cancels clipboard events at the document level so it can paste drawings onto a chart. Ctrl+V died before my input ever saw it.
Typing the key worked. Pasting silently did nothing.
The extension injects a panel into TradingView.
TradingView has chart shortcuts on most letter keys, so it listens for keyboard events globally. Type "50" into my input and you've also changed the timeframe.
So I guarded the panel: keydown, keypress, keyup, beforeinput, input.
My first paying customer couldn't activate the product.
The licence key field wouldn't accept a paste. Not "was buggy" — wouldn't accept a paste at all.
