My nervous system doesn’t snap all at once; it frays like gauze. It streams like tears. All day long. A headline, a sound, a face I didn’t expect. And then I patch it up. Over and over. No ceremony. Just the usual: deep breath, fake smile, keep moving. Then I scroll through photos of people who are gone and pretend they’re just offline. Recently I started developing bruises in my sleep. When I wake up, they are there. I press on them, gently. Maybe it’s grief trying to surface, or maybe it’s just another malfunction.
They appear in silence; on my thighs, my arms, across my ribs, as if something is trying to crawl out from under my skin. Either way, I cover them up and go about my day. No one asks. No one sees. I’m learning that some wounds don’t bleed; they feast on you.
