It is 15 years to the day that political workers Kabir Baloch, Mushtaq Baloch and Attaullah Baloch were forcibly disappeared in Khuzdar, Balochistan. HRCP notes with great concern that despite these cases having been registered with the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances (COIED), the victims' families still do not know where their loved ones are or whether they are safe or even alive.

The state's failure to trace its own citizens, much less identify the perpetrators and hold them accountable, is a damning indictment of its policy towards the province of Balochistan as a whole. This indifference must not continue. The COIED must be held to account for its characteristic lack of transparency and accountability, while the new government must commit publicly to ending the heinous crime of enforced disappearances.

“The Pakistani authorities should be ashamed of the harassment meted out to the Baloch Long March protestors. This is not the end the Baloch women would have hoped for when undertaking the perilous journey with their children to demand justice for their families. The authorities have been heartlessly indifferent to the plight and demands of the peaceful protestors camped out in the severe cold for the past month,” said Carolyn Horn, Programme Director, Law and Policy at @amnesty.

Pakistan: The Baloch Long March that started on 6 December 2023 from Turbat, Balochistan to Islamabad, in wake of the extra-judicial killing of Balach Mola Bakhsh’s killing, is being led by women and families of those forcibly disappeared. Since reaching Islamabad the protestors have been holding a sit in for the last 16 days.

Enforced disappearances are a violation of several human rights of those disappeared, including their right to life and liberty, as well as the economic and social rights of their families.
