My client was arrested and I went to secure his release. I convinced the OCS that the alleged offence was a misdemeanor, with the worst possible sentence being 6 months or a fine of 3K. Under the law, one should not be held in a police station for an offence punishable by a fine or a 6 months imprisonment.

The OCS agreed and instructed the Investigating Officer to release my client.

To our shock, the Investigating Officer started demanding that my client “pay for the police Airbnb.” I laughed at first, but he was serious and even threatened to rearrest my client.Tried reaching the OCS but couldn't get to him.

I escalated the matter to the Sub-County Police Commander, and my client was released without paying a dime.

Sadly, this is the reality in some of our police stations, you are arrested and then pressured to pay for a “public Airbnb.”
