There is nothing unusual about the current period of warming, either globally or in Tibet. There were similar warmings to now on the Tibetan Plateu around 400AD, 620AD, 880AD and 990AD;

Our preliminary analysis of #Sentinel-1 satellite #radar observations from January 8 to August 19, 2026, reveals measurable #downslope motion, reaching ~10 mm/month, within the #glacier/ice-rock system near the apparent source of the #August 26 #Nepal–#Tibet disaster.
Remarkably, the satellite observations extend to just seven days before the catastrophic collapse and flood.
The results suggest that the #slope was #deforming #prior to #failure and raise an important question: could satellite radar observations help #identify #developing #instability in #high-#mountain glacier and rock systems before #catastrophic #collapse?

I’ve spent many weeks doing fieldwork in Tibet, sitting above these enormous, deeply incised Himalayan river systems and seeing firsthand just how geologically active this landscape is.
So spare me the climate-change grift every time a natural disaster strikes.
Catastrophic glacial outburst floods are not new. The 1981 Zhangzangbo GLOF released ~20 million m³ of water and debris into Nepal, with estimated peak discharge approaching 16,000 m³/s. The Himalayas experienced enormous GLOFs long before today's atmospheric CO₂ concentrations.
If it happened naturally in the past, we should expect it to happen naturally again in the future—regardless of atmospheric CO₂.
Turning a horrific loss of life into an immediate climate-change narrative without demonstrating that CO₂ caused this particular event isn't attribution. It's opportunism.
And the people exploiting tragedy to do it are grifters.
I’ve spent many weeks doing fieldwork in Tibet along the Nepal border. One thing becomes obvious very quickly: these remote high-altitude communities run on diesel.
Diesel excavators cut the roads. Diesel bulldozers move the earth. Diesel trucks bring food, fuel, construction materials, and supplies into villages that would otherwise be extraordinarily difficult to reach. At these elevations and under these conditions, reliable energy isn’t an abstract policy debate... it’s survival and development.
The irony is hard to miss: wealthy Westerners who built their own prosperity on abundant fossil energy now virtue-signal about eliminating the very fuels that make modern life possible in some of the poorest and most isolated places on Earth.
I lived with these communities. I talked with the people who actually live there. They weren’t asking to have their diesel taken away.
For them, fossil fuels aren’t a political symbol. They’re roads, food, construction, transportation, and opportunity.
It’s easy to demand “the end of fossil fuels” from a comfortable Western city. Try making that argument at 15,000 feet in a Himalayan village while watching a diesel excavator build its only road to the outside world.
The largest waterfall on Earth isn’t on land. It’s underwater.
Between Greenland and Iceland, cold dense water sinks beneath warmer water and drops around 3.5 km down the ocean floor.
Most of us will never see it, but one of Earth’s biggest waterfalls is hidden beneath the sea.
1970. Yungay, Peru.
An earthquake triggered a colossal rock-and-ice avalanche from Nevado Huascarán. 50–100 million m³ of material raced ~14.5 km down the mountain and buried Yungay. More than 18,000 people were killed.
Atmospheric CO₂: ~326 ppm.
If a catastrophe like this happened today, climate attribution would immediately dominate the headlines. But catastrophic glacier, rock and debris flows have been occurring in high mountains for centuries... and the geological record at Huascarán shows repeated prehistoric events.
Put the emphasis where it can actually save lives: monitor unstable slopes and glaciers, map hazard zones, build warning systems, improve evacuation plans and make mountain communities more resilient.
We cannot prevent earthquakes or eliminate every mountain hazard by changing atmospheric CO₂. We can get much better at keeping people out of their path.
This newly released video, captured more than 50 km downstream from the site of the glacier collapse, shows the rapid arrival of the flood wave, obliterating everything in its wake.

What will the next solar minimum be like? Short & shallow or long & deep? The last two were long and deep, with the Sun going dormant and blank for a long time. Like two glacials ... The preceding two were short & shallow. I remember the SC22-23 minimum - it was barely noticeable.
