The best explanation I've ever listened to as to why the "Thucydides trap" doesn't apply when it comes to China, and why China doesn't have Western-like hegemonic aspirations.
By George Yeo, former foreign minister of Singapore and imho the single best analyst of China anywhere in the world (I always religiously listen to his talks).
His main argument is that it's foolish to apply a Western prism that it the legacy of the Greek Peloponnesian war to predict Chinese behavior: you need to look at China's own history and culture. And China has always shown that it wishes to remain a homogeneous society which means its very DNA prevents it from acting like the West by reshaping the world in its image, since that would necessarily imply that China transforms its own culture to be universally applicable.
I 100% agree with this. The world that China wants is a world where it and other countries are NOT forced to reshape themselves in the West's image, not a world where China wants to reshape others. That's anathema to Chinese culture: at no point in China's history were there Chinese missionaries roaming the world trying to convert others to Daoism or Chinese Buddhism, they just don't do this stuff because they understand that if you want to reshape others you first need to reshape yourself and thereby lose your homogeneity and uniqueness. On the contrary, throughout their history, all of China's efforts have always been on preserving itself from outside influence and interference, which is the very reason why it is the longest-lasting civilization in history.

Here is an essential thread for our times @khalidi79397 . A history of the offers between Israel and Palestinians, showing that real two-state compromises were frequently on the table and rejected usually by Palestinian leadership and often overly controlled by Israeli leadership. (It leaves out the two moments in 1939 and early 1947 when the Palestinian leadership turned down actual offers - by the British empire - of a Palestine state without a Jewish state at all.) The history is essential to know because it totally contradicts the fake narrative of guilt and innocence often propagated by progressive activists. Nor is this a blame game. Opportunities were lost and they been paid for by both nations in terrible suffering. But its real message is relevant and positive right now: so much blood, so much suffering and killing of civilians on all sides on all fronts. When the war stops as it must and soon, it is incumbent on both nations to promote leaders who will discuss the only way forward that will allow the people of both nations to lead safe, normal lives and of course that means not getting everything one's more extreme wings always wanted: the territorial compromise of two nations, two republics...
As Yom Kippur approaches I have been thinking, and I might have understood something profound. Hear me out.
Antisemitism is famously a horseshoe. But why?
Why do the far-left and the far-right, who agree on nothing else, unite in their hatred of Jews?
What unites the “The Juice will not replace us” mouth-breathers with the “From da Riva to da Sea” weirdos?
What could possibly link the tiki torch crowd with the terrorist cosplaying watermelon people?
I think I know. Let me try to explain: (1/12)
MUST WATCH: Bill Clinton on Israel & Hamas
"Hamas is really smart. When they decide to rocket Israel, they insinuate themselves in the hospitals, in the schools, in the highly populous areas."
“I killed myself to give the Palestinians a state. I had a deal they turned down that would have given them all of Gaza... between 96 and 97% of the West Bank, compensating land in Israel, you name it."

Israel's war in Gaza is arguably the cleanest urban war in history. They have kept civilian casualties low, dismantling Hamas and Hezbollah, and freeing Gaza and Lebanon from terrorists. In a sane world, Benjamin Netanyahu would receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
