Exxaro Announces New CEO Appointment
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ben Magara as Exxaro’s new Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 April 2025. Following an expedited and targeted selection process. Ben will succeed Acting CEO Riaan Koppeschaar who will continue in his role as Finance Director.
Ben is a highly respected Mining Engineer and industry veteran with over 35 years of experience spanning both soft and hard rock mining across underground and open-pit operations. He is widely recognized for his strategic leadership and operational excellence, having led the turnaround, restructuring, and successful disposal of Lonmin Plc to Sibanye Stillwater, helping shape the world’s largest PGM producer.
Beyond his leadership at major mining houses, Ben founded Africa Mining & Metals Group (AMMG) in 2020, focusing on battery metals and precious metals. His extensive experience also includes advisory roles in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Copperbelt and serving as an independent non-executive director at Weir Plc (FTSE100). He will step down from the Board of Grindrod Limited as of 1 April 2025.
We look forward to Ben’s leadership in steering Exxaro into its next chapter of growth, innovation, and sustainability.

He wanted to be a Bus Driver But Ended Steering Billion Dollar Businesses.
As a child, Ben Magara biggest aspiration was to be a bus driver.
Growing up in a poor family, the bus drivers who passed through his village seemed to have comfortable lives, or at least much more comfortable than his.
From that start in life, Ben Magara has gone on to run multiple billion-dollar businesses.
The latest—Exxaro Resources, a diversified mining company with a Market Cap of R55 billion ($3 billion)—just appointed him to take over from 1 April 2025.
Here is Ben Magara’s Story.
Born on June 24, 1967, in Bikita, Zimbabwe, Bennetor "Ben" Magara is the fifth of nine children from a poor background.
As a child, he woke up at 4 a.m. every morning and worked in the garden before school and then later herded cattle.
Magara attended Macheke High School for his O-Levels and then moved to Fletcher High School in Gweru for his A-Levels, where he won the Best A-Level Science student award.
Inspired by his brother, he pursued a degree in Mining Engineering at the University of Zimbabwe, graduating in 1990.
After graduating, he did an internship at Hwange Colliery and then moved to South Africa in 1994 and joined Anglo American.
At Anglo he rose through the ranks to become CEO of Anglo Coal South Africa at the age of 38 — a remarkable achievement.
But he didn't stop there.
After taking on more responsibility at Anglo American and eventually sitting on the board of Anglo SA, in 2013, he was appointed the CEO of Lonmin , the world's third-largest platinum producer.
He also became the LSE listed company's first black Chief Executive.
At Lonmin, he successfully restructured the company and returned it to profitability before it was acquired by Sibanye-Stillwater.
In 2019 Magara founded Africa Metals & Mining Group, focusing on battery and precious metals and now has been appointed to take over the CEO job at Exxaro Resources.
On announcing his appointment as Exxaro Chairman, Geoffrey Qhena said, “Ben Magara brings a wealth of mining leadership, global board, and governance experience to Exxaro along with a reputation for impeccable integrity."
From a village boy dreaming of buses to a market leader managing billions.
If he can go that far, why can't you.
