🚨#BREAKING: Outrage is erupting in Charlotte NC after a Black woman who ran a RED LIGHT, hitting a 25-year-old White man out for a run, and DROVE AWAY while he DIED ON THE STREET...

...was sentenced to ONLY 30 DAYS in jail.

Yes, you read that right... THIRTY DAYS.

His name was Lance Sotelo.

Lance grew up in Dalton, Georgia, and was a cross-country MVP in high school.

He came to Queens University of Charlotte and ran cross country and track and field for SIX YEARS.

He was the student body president.

On January 14th, Lance was doing the thing he loved most, he was out for a run in Charlotte NC

At 5:47 in the evening, police say 28-year-old Q'Laundra Hood was ran a red light and she hit him, hard.

...and then she drove away.

She left him in the road and kept going.

Lance Sotelo died right there on the streets of Charlotte.
He never even made it to a hospital.

He didn't have life insurance, his family had to start a GoFundMe just to bury their son.

Hood turned herself in and pleaded guilty to felony hit-and-run and involuntary manslaughter.

And on Tuesday, a courtroom packed with Lance's family and friends watched the judge hand down the sentence.

30 days in jail. And probation.

Thirty days and $765 restitution.

🚨#BREAKING: Outrage is erupting after White inmate in a South Carolina jail run by a Black man just DIED OF THIRST on the floor of his cell... covered INCHES-DEEP IN FECES, with the water to his sink SHUT OFF.

He drank out of his OWN TOILET to stay alive.

He wrote letters to his father pleading for help because he was being tortured because he was White.

His name was Gary "Bubba" Blair, he was 43.

He was the caregiver for his own elderly father. He had two nephews he adored and a dog named Scrubby.

So why was he in jail?

In February, Bubba showed up at his sister's house wearing a sheriff's office golf shirt, a security badge, handcuffs, and pepper spray. Deputies arrested him for impersonating a police officer.

A judge found he wasn't mentally competent to stand trial and ORDERED the state to place him into treatment on June 3.

The South Carolina Office of Mental Health never followed through.

Bubba sat in that jail for 181 days waiting for a spot.

He passed away 51 days after a judge ordered them to get him help.

In April, he write a letter to his father:

"I've lost about 90 pounds so far. I'm starving to death in here; only two meals a day, that's it... you starve, and I also have to drink from my toilet and no mattress to sleep on, only a hard ground."

"I’ve been abused by staff and assaulted by everyone on the unit; I had to go 28 days without a shower... no help for a white man"

"The staff is very nasty to white inmates thanks to Troy Ellerbe and James Dixon."

Then in May, Bubba did something that will haunt me.

He wrote a letter to a CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE begging for help.

The letter had a bad address. It was returned. It never arrived.

Meanwhile, sources say the water to his sink was SHUT OFF. His cell floor and walls were covered in feces INCHES DEEP. He was alone. Never let out.

Other inmates, who got a few hours out of their cells, told the news they watched Bubba drink toilet water.

So they took an empty potato chip bag and filled it with water and pushed it through the food slot in his door!!!!!

Most of it spilled before it ever reached him.

On July 24th, jailers found him dead on the floor.

49 days later, the autopsy came back.

Cause of death: profound dehydration due to DEPRIVATION OF WATER.

Manner of death: HOMICIDE.

The report also found bed sores on his HEELS, consistent with a man lying on a concrete floor for days at a time.

Acute bronchial pneumonia.
Profound weight loss.
Physical evidence that he had been INGESTING TOILET WATER.

He had lost so much weigh and was in such poor condition, his sister and aunt went to the funeral home to see him... they did not recognize his body.

The sheriff fired the Black jail administrator 5 days after Bubba died, and refuses to say why.

Bubba Blair sang to old folks in nursing homes. He took care of his daddy.

He deserved so much better than dying of thirst on a concrete floor.

I was the main counterparty for airline puts before/during the 9/11 attacks (I was in the World Trade Center building for lunch the day before); they were buying puts in $UAL and American Airlines for weeks before the attacks. When someone pays you $1.05 for a dollar, you think this is free money; when someone pays you $5 for $1, you bury your face in research, study the trade and you're very worried; when someone pays you $10 for $1, you know you're dead, but it just has not happened yet (and this is after I already got my ass kicked in Enron). The morning of 9/11, I would have blown out hard and would have had to fire about 60 or 70 people; the market didn't open, so that saved my firm. We didn't know there were 4 planes in the air, it could have been 4000 planes for all I knew so I told all of my traders to go home. My office was at the Cboe so I assumed it was also a target, and our lives were in danger. I was very worried that my NYC guys were dead (they were ok). I had no idea what to expect the next few days. When the market did open, I was down massively, but not blown out. The markets were so wide and the trading was so good we were net profitable by early November, a stunning turn of events. Stories about money feel gross when some people lost everything; I'm very sympathetic to the people who went through unimaginable hardship and I feel like me talking about trading is so small and petty in juxtaposition to the seriousness of true loss that many thousands of people experienced.

As someone who has personally spent $500k / mo+ on Google Ads for years, I can tell you with certainty:

This revenue growth in Search is artificial & extremely unhealthy for Google’s business long term

Search volumes are declining as legacy search is being increasingly cannibalized by non-monetized LLM queries

Google’s response?

Manufacture revenue growth via short-sighted, highly extractive, customer-hostile tactics. I.e. charge advertisers more for lower quality clicks, including clicks they do not want and explicitly did not approve Google to charge them for

A few examples to illustrate:

For all of its history until recently, Google operated on a 2nd price auction model

I.e. if you bid $5 CPC and the next highest bidder bids $1 CPC, Google charged you $1.01 for the click (one penny more than the 2nd highest bidder) rather than the $5 you bid

This was a genius move by Google early on as it incentivizes advertisers to input their true maximum willingness to pay rather than trying to play the game of bidding low and constantly adjusting to try to stay just ahead of the next highest bidder while still not paying too much

However recently, Google silently deprecated the 2nd price auction and began charging advertisers as much as their bid and budget caps allow, regardless of what anyone else is bidding

It’s a short-sighted cash grab at the expense of the long term health of the advertiser ecosystem

Making thing worse, Google also recently nerfed keyword targeting precision

Google previously had precise keyword targeting settings that allowed advertisers pick individual search phrases to bid on, defined down to the character w/ exact match or phrase match targeting

This was one of the core features that made search advertising magic, enabling advertisers to run extremely precise campaigns based on exactly what their target customer typed

But now, even if you bid on a specific term or phrase using the strictest exact
-match targeting settings, Google will show your ad across 1000’s of unrelated keywords, labeling them as as “exact match (close variant)”

The definition of “close variant” means whatever they want it to and changes constantly. The result is advertisers get billed for clicks that are totally irrelevant to their business and that their targeting settings explicitly forbid Google from targeting. Google does it anyway and there’s no ability to turn this off

So now exact match is broad match, and broad match is just meaningless spam

This is all very bad for advertisers, but for Google, it allows them to show your ad and bill you for clicks across 1000x more searches that were previously going unmonetized (mainly because they’re garbage queries no one wants)

This is how you grow revenue atop declining search volumes

Lastly, and perhaps most egregiously, Google quietly stopped respecting budget caps by a factor of 2x. For example campaigns we’ve been running for years with $1000 daily budget caps suddenly began spending $2000+ per day

And the extra spend is entirely on the garbage keywords Google arbitrarily throws in as “exact match (close variants)” which have no value to our business, but can’t be turned off

Google offers no refunds nor any recourse for overspend or spend on keywords you explicitly did not target

These are not the actions of a healthy business. These are the actions of company whose core business is in decline but desperately needs to pump quarterly earnings so Wall Street will continue to fund insane capex while hopefully looking through their rapidly deteriorating negative free cash flow

Google operated a benevolent monopoly for the better part of 25 yrs

Meaning the value Google captured from Search was but a small fraction of the value it created, and that spread produced a potential energy that justified expectations of high earnings growth far, far into the future

This is now no longer the case

At the alter of AI capex, Google is sacrificing the golden goose
