Come every weekend, we get to see pictures of escapades and holidays featuring cocktails and glasses from many on social media including here, on Twitter.
You may not realize it, but everytime we normalize drinking alcohol on social media posts as if it is some sort of ultimate holiday prop, we are creating more Mihir Shah's in the process.
It is a butterfly effect.
Instead of posting photos of cocktail drinks on beaches or your home or apartment balcony, we need to educate people around us, especially the youth, about how alcohol use, even the lowest, can have devastating consequences on not just the drinker, but other people, their families, societies and communities as a whole.
This young man drank substantial amount of alcohol and drove his car into a woman, dragging her 1.5km and killing her. The woman's husband and daughter were waiting for her to return home to have a homely fish meal she went out to get from the market.
Instead they got to see her mangled dragged under the car body.
There are videos showing both the husband and the daughter of the "murdered" woman crying non-stop on social media. Not many would understand their pain and loss, but I do, because I see families devastated by alcohol everyday.
Please take a strong stand and a vow, to not put up photos of alcohol/cocktails on your social media handles. Let us stop normalizing alcohol. This is a citizen's responsibility towards their community and country because we do not want to create more people like Mihir Shah to driving on our roads.
There is no safe level of alcohol use for human health.
