FINAL: Iowa 20, Michigan 19
The Hawkeyes convert three third downs in a 91-yard two-minute drill, and steal one from the Wolverines in Ann Arbor
Michigan seemed to dominate most of the game, but 8 penalties, giving up a kick-return TD and late defensive miscues proved costly.
On fourth-and-1 in Michigan territory, Iowa flinches. On the next play, the Hawkeyes' 51-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide right.
Michigan now has the ball, leading 19-14 with 2:33 remaining.
TOUCHDOWN: Underwood buys himself some time, seems ready to run up field, but Buchanan's defender starts to run up, and Underwood finds him for a 49-yard TD. 2PA no good, but the stadium breathed a collective sigh of relief
Michigan 19, Iowa 14, 11:59 to go
TOUCHDOWN: One play after a surprise tipped pass on third-down let to a completion, Iowa takes a lead on a 16-yard completion to Reece Vander Zee. Michigan's squandered drives into Iowa territory looming large.
Iowa 14, Michigan 13, 14:02 to go
Stats through three quarters. Michigan has missed some opportunities to make the score reflect it, but is dominating Iowa in yardage and first downs. Hawkeyes are driving though.
FIELD GOAL: Trey Butkowski hits a 22-yard field goal, extending Michigan's lead. The Wolverines get some badly-needed breathing room, though it's still a one-score game.
Michigan 13, Iowa 7, 1:29 to go 3Q
Underwood was cooking on that drive, getting Michigan to Iowa's 18, then threw a third-down interception at the 2. The Wolverines now have four drives inside Iowa's 25, and 10 points to show for it
Halftime: No. 18 Michigan 10, No. 17 Iowa 7
The Wolverines' passing game is clicking, they look better in both trenches and they have driven inside Iowa's 25 three times. But Iowa's kick-return TD and some drive-stalling miscues for Michigan's offense keeping it close
Michigan currently has a 225-59 margin in yardage and a 12-4 edge in first downs, but has just a 10-7 lead after another stalled drive in Iowa territory.
If this game goes awry for Michigan, the missed opportunities will be a storyline.
Underwood looks more comfortable, and the play-calling seems to fit the personnel better. Also think they might be playing Iowa's defense at the right time. Lot of new faces, especially up front, and this is arguably their first real test of the season.
FIELD GOAL: Trey Butwkoski caps Michigan's drive with a 41-yard field goal. He's now 3-3 on the year, with all three attempts coming from 40-49 yards.
Michigan 10, Iowa 7, 12:58 2Q
TOUCHDOWN: Iowa answers right back, as Braeden Jackson takes the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. Jackson entered today with no career kick-return yards, but Iowa special teams seem to always have things brewing.
Michigan 7, Iowa 7, 1:45 to go 1Q
