We're at a weird point in history where EVM equivalence is both table stakes and also completely not a differentiator for new L1s and L2s.

Toly is right when he says that there are over 100 EVM chains - these environments have little tech differentiation (forks of geth, or more recently forks of the OP stack) and are mostly narrative driven.

If there's one thing I have learned from prior experiences, it's that there aren't shortcuts. Building a thriving ecosystem that can maximally support developers in their entrepreneurial journey requires exceptional effort - both on the technology side and on the developer support side.

From a tech perspective, any ecosystem vying for mindshare has to do something new and difficult. It's almost a "proof of work" of sorts. For Monad, that comes in the form of several advances, such as rebuilding the EVM from scratch in C++ to support parallelization (not just the VM itself, but also building a custom database that supports parallel access!); pipelining consensus and execution; and building a high-performance pipelined BFT consensus mechanism. These changes help apps scale to millions of DAUs - table stakes to be #1 on the iOS App Store. Along the way, I hope that these changes will help inspire improvements to Ethereum itself.

From the developer support side - there are similarly no shortcuts. Monad aims to be the ecosystem that provides the most support to early-stage entrepreneurs. It's not easy to start a crypto startup - it can feel like fighting a battle on 10 fronts at once - and we know that and are here to help.

What differentiates Monad (how to make the EVM really performant):

1. Custom EVM implementation in C++. Most blockchains reuse the implementation from go-ethereum (geth)

2. MonadDb is a custom merkle trie datastore that supports parallel access. Parallelizing execution without parallelizing access has limited performance improvements

3. Deferred execution: pipelining between consensus and execution massively increases the time budget for execution

4. Pipelined 2-phase hotstuff consensus: high-performance consensus mechanism, needed to carry 10k TPS of throughput across a large, geographically diverse set of validators
