I'm telling you this right now, guys: no matter what you see on Twitter, no matter how convinced some people are that the CPC is doomed, the Liberals will govern forever, Poilievre "needs to go," or whatever the take of the day happens to be, remember one thing:

Nobody cares about any of this right now. And Twitter is not the real world.

Seriously.

There has not yet been a single inflection point or defining issue that has caused normal people who don't live online to stop what they're doing and start paying attention. The country is on autopilot, headed straight toward the side of a mountain, but the passengers are still oblivious because, from their seats, all they can see is blue sky outside the window.

Eventually, though, the inflection point comes.

And when it does, it's often something that seems almost benign on its own among a sea of what looks like worse scandal and stupidity. It's simply the final straw. The last Jenga piece holding up a tower that was already unstable.

For Martin, it was the Jane Creba shooting.

For Harper, it was a dead Syrian kid face down in the sand.

For Trudeau's downfall, it was the "housing isn't a primary federal responsibility" comment.

For Doug Ford, it was his stupid, arrogant plane fiasco.

None of those moments, in isolation, should have been enough to change everything. But each one became the moment when everything else came crashing down around them - and once the collapse began, they never really recovered.

This will happen to Carney too. It just hasn't happened yet.

You can already see the cracks forming. Hubris and a feeling of invincibility are why he bungled the condo bailout so badly - and people noticed. He and his government are also in for a world of hurt over CUSMA, and elbows can only stay up for so long before the shoulders give out.

As for the CPC: changing leaders, endlessly complaining that the party is too conservative, not conservative enough, too centrist, not centrist enough - or whatever else the Twitter discourse has decided to obsess over this week - will not change the fundamental reality. Politics, more than almost anything else, is about timing. And right now, while nobody is paying attention, the timing simply isn't there.

Harper had some really bad years in 2004 and 2005 too. A lot of the kids confidently explaining Canadian politics online today either weren't around or aren't old enough to remember that. (And yes, 2004 was the first campaign I worked on, in case anyone wants to carbon-date me.)

But just as surely as the moment hasn't arrived yet, eventually it will. Something will happen. Maybe something huge. Maybe something seemingly trivial. But it will be the moment when ordinary people finally look up, start paying attention, and see what so many Twitter talking heads - on all sides - are completely oblivious to right now.

Until then, enjoy your summer, folks.

Keep swimming through the waves, stay focused, and don't exhaust yourself fighting the tide. The time will come when the right wave arrives.

That's when you climb on top of it and ride it all the way to the finish line.
