Pages from my mom’s final notebook. She wrote these in the last 4 months of her life.

Things to do, calls to make, shopping lists, goals. Me. The knit outfit she picked out for my Christmas portrait. The plan for how she’d cut the carpet to fit our new apartment — her final one. The albums she wanted: Prince, Garth Brooks, Foreigner. Prepping for Christmas. Chores. Life.

My mom left me so many little messages, but it was her meticulously-kept notebook and 91-93 planners that helped me learn all I needed to know about the strong, independent woman who was making it on her own with me.

My mom wasn’t suicidal. She wasn’t a hardcore, raging addict. She was a normal, healthy, 30-year-old woman, doing her best to raise her daughter amid a difficult, lengthy divorce, bitter breakup with my father and normal financial struggles. She didn’t want to die and she didn’t have some psychotic break. She should still be here. She would still be here with me, if someone hadn’t made the choice to take her from me.

She will get her justice.
