In Igbo tradition, the 'red cap' carries profound significance, symbolizing authority, heritage, leadership and influence. Wearing this unique cap is a privilege reserved for a specific group; the 'Nze,' 'Ozo,' 'iche' and 'Ogbuefi,' title bearers.

Typically, this cap is worn by men who have fulfilled certain responsibilities and have adhered to community standards. To that effect, they are expected to uphold the cap's sanctity, refraining from any form of misrepresentation or misconduct.

When someone attains a chieftaincy title in Igboland, they are expected to wear the cap during formal traditional events or when they have a meaningful role to play within their family, clan, or community.

Cultural experts have strongly emphasized the need for preserving the revered status of the 'Igbo cap' within Igbo moral and cultural values. Hence, wearing the cap casually or without meeting the established criteria is one act that downplays its significance to our culture, and should not be encouraged.
