Will the @churchofengland read this or continue to flog itself in a one sided manner? Goodness me, each ‘issue’ it touches just now is being so badly handled as to irritate intensely those of us committed to its purpose, heritage and future.
As one of 20 clergy to vote against this, it worries me hugely that just at the time when our Jewish friends, neighbours, and fellow citizens need to know that the Established Church supports and upholds them, we look like we have abandoned them.
Dear @RoyalFamily, how about a public holiday today next year to celebrate your ancestor King Æthelstan becoming the first King of all England eleven centuries ago in the year 927?
“Most clergy I know react to the upsurge in populism with horror, and wish they could somehow suppress it. We should be honest enough to admit that may simply be pursuing our class interest.”
Fun fact: atheists made fun of Father Georges Lemaître when he proposed the Big Bang theory, because the theory claimed that the universe had a beginning.
Until the theory was widely accepted, they believed the universe always existed.
To atheists of the 1930’s, the idea of a “big bang” beginning of the universe implied that God existed, and was mocked.
Idle thought about C of E management...
Consider Sam Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford (1845-69). He didn't even have a full-time secretary, let alone a vast diocesan bureaucracy. In his time as bishop, his diocese saw:
- 100+ new churches built
- 250+ churches restored
- 70+ parsonages built
- theological and teaching colleges founded
- Bishop constantly visiting parishes, offering personal pastoral care to laity and clergy alike.
Quantum mutatus ab illis...
One of the troubling issues the Shabir Ahmed Rochdale groomer case has thrown up is that governments in this country have either forgotten how to use power in pursuit of the UK national interest, or are scared to do so. We are told Pakistan won’t take this rapist and abuser back and that even if the law was changed, it would therefore be impossible to deport him.
Utter nonsense.
If the Pakistani government were told in no uncertain terms that UK visas for their citizens would be cancelled and refused, sanctions applied to them and their families and that we would use our international organisation memberships to frustrate any of their own ambitions, they would quickly change their minds.
The problem of course is that we need a Government comfortable with the use of British power - as was once the norm in this country - to enable this to happen.
Exactly how much money does this British MP think British taxpayers should pay Jamaica, and what are her ways of paying for it?
What gets cut? Which taxes are raised?
She should not be allowed to grandstand without explaining how her constituents will pay this enormous amount
The only MP to have been made a saint ^by Rome^.
The CofE's process of adding people to the Kalendar and giving them a festival (of greater or lesser significance), has seen a number of MPs being giving days, including George Herbert, William Wilberforce, & Lord Shaftsbury.
These thugs fractured the spine of Sgt Kate Evans, who spoke in court of the medical and emotional trauma she still lives with.
Prison is where they belong.
Unlike Zack Polanski, I want serious consequences for anyone who attacks police officers risking their lives to protect us.
