Marcus Walker

A clergyman in the Church of England in the Diocese of London. Musings in Church and State and late Roman History (and, in fact, any history).

Think of all that PIP you’d lose.

[Rachel Zader @RachelZader]

Can you imagine taking allergy medicine for a few days and your longtime depression or ADHD just goes away? I'd be pissed

[Marcus Walker @WalkerMarcus]

@2D0XPS It’s frankly just bizarre. There is no rational sense to it.

[Marcus Walker @WalkerMarcus]

Has the Defence Secretary told the Defence Secretary this? Because I’m pretty sure he’d be horrified to discover he was cutting defence programmes and training days while simultaneously expecting a war within 1000 days.

[LBC @LBC]

Britain must be ready for war within 1,000 days, Defence Secretary warns

[John Chilver @claycon]

Couldn’t agree more. I stood as a Save the Parish candidate for the House of Laity in the Diocese of Peterborough for General Synod. The real work is being done at parish level.

[Marcus Walker @WalkerMarcus]

@jackpalmerwhite @VodafoneUK I did buy an esim! That’s what makes this so angering.

[Marcus Walker @WalkerMarcus]

I’m cannot tell you how awful @VodafoneUK’s travel esim was. It crawled along at a snail’s pace - apparently ‘unlimited data’ only meant for messaging and the like - and worse managed to glitch often enough that I got charged on my primary account for data roaming.

[Marcus Walker @WalkerMarcus]

@si_ad My Vodafone Travel esim seems to operate on an entirely fictional basis. It teases me with things like 5G with all bars but fails actually to give any internet

[Dr Francis Young @DrFrancisYoung]

@therealsjpf I don’t know how we break the spell of the Blairite mind virus that every problem is solved by more regulation, more office-creation, more professionalisation

[Marcus Walker @WalkerMarcus]

It was just as bad when I flew on to Turkey and I just gave up and bought a second esim - Holyafly - which worked perfectly. Never ever use @vodafone’s travel options. Worse than having no esim, as you’ll pay as if you didn’t have it anyway!

The main impact being an EU Member has is that you get to have the EU be in charge of lots of your laws, regulations & areas such as monetary policy, sanctions & immigration, instead of your own government. That's genuinely a benefit to lots of Members. Would it be to the UK?

[Daniel Hannan @DanielJHannan]

A reminder of what the Globe used to be.

[Zapadnjak @AngloVarangian]

My Jordanian Godmother told me the Royal Family of Jordan are very fond and supportive of the Orthodox Church because when a Palestinian terrorist group angry at the Jordanian Royal family for annexing the West Bank. Assassinated King Abdullah of Jordan in Jerusalem in 1951, a Greek Orthodox Monk hid Crown Prince Hussein under his cassock and safely brought him to the Patriarchate. The Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem let the Jordanian authorities know their prince was unharmed. The Monk who saved him was Father Theodosios Makkos, who was born in Smryna.

[Adrian Hilton @Adrian_Hilton]

‘The Church has increased its administrative staff by nearly 80 per cent in 20 years while the number of parish priests has almost halved..’
The administrators truly are plenteous, but the clergy are few; Pray ye therefore the Bishops will open their eyes.

[Lord WarGit of Superlative Value @WarGit]

We've changed a lot as a country. There was a time, really not long ago, when most of Middle England, including people on relatively modest incomes, would have seen this as obviously and sinisterly un-British.

[Orthodox Christian @orthodox_33ad]

This is Fadi al-Halsa, a young Orthodox Christian (Rum Orthodox) dentist from Karak, Jordan who only just graduated from Alexandria University's dental school this year.

Instead of celebrating his bright future, Fadi's parents and two sisters are now laying him to rest. Fadi was martyred in the Karak Saint George Church terrorist attack in Jordan.

[Kyle Orton @KyleWOrton]

There's just no space for the satirists any more, is there.

[Hussain Abdul-Hussain @hahussain]

When Aden was under imperial influence, it looked like a place everyone wants to live in.
Then nationalism and independence kicked in, and Aden became the pit of misery

[Emma Harriet Nicholson @Baroness_Nichol]

Important. Very.

[Marcus Walker @WalkerMarcus]

@Lux1090 When we were in Egypt just now we prayed for the King and the President of this Republic - because we should pray for those in authority.

[Marcus Walker @WalkerMarcus]

That an act of worship doesn’t pray for the Head of State is highly suspect

[Gordon D Comstock @GordonDComstock]

That the Anglican service of Evensong still asks God to save the King is absurd.

[Richard Chapman @SelsdonChapman]

There should be no VAT on church repairs. Our membership of the EU prevented us from varying our VAT rules in this way before. That obstacle no longer exists.

[Marcus Walker @WalkerMarcus]

Loving the use of ‘under a pilot scheme’ to make doing nothing sound professional.

Under a pilot scheme I shall not be working in the morning until February. Under a pilot scheme I shall not be paying tax.

[Sam Coates Sky @SamCoatesSky]

EXC: by @Mollie_Malone1

🥶Sky News has revealed the Metropolitan Police is reducing enforcement of offenders who breach their tag conditions amid resourcing pressures and following early prisoner release. Under a pilot scheme that we disclose details of today, and running until the spring, officers will not act on breaches of police curfews or tag batteries of under an hour, unless the person wearing the tag is considered to be of particular risk to the public. The country's largest police force has been clear in its instruction to officers that these types of breach notifications are still to be reviewed, *but will only progress to potential arrest in cases where there are risk or safeguarding concerns.*
