News: Prominent #AI researcher #Timnit_Gebru named 2026 Right Livelihood Award recipient
The Stockholm-based Right Livelihood Foundation announced Timnit’s recognition on 30 September, citing her work exposing the harms of AI and shifting the debate toward the technology’s present-day impacts on marginalized communities.
The foundation also recognized her efforts to develop more equitable, community-led approaches to AI research and development.
“A system built to serve the few was never going to hold. This year, we honor women who refused to wait for permission. They are rewriting the rules that autocrats, patriarchs, and Silicon Valley’s most powerful men assumed were theirs to write alone”, said Ole von Uexkull, Executive Director of Right Livelihood.
Beyond her work in technology, Timnit dedicates her time to speak publicly on human rights violations around the world.

One in six of our people perished.
Villages were burned.
Women & girls were raped en masse.
Doctors, teachers, priests — all became targets.
Starvation was used as a weapon.
These are not “tragedies.” They are crimes against humanity.

With United Arab Emirates arms, the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan have been committing mass executions: massacring hundreds at a hospital, burning people alive, forcing men to dig pits and burying them alive, going house to house and shooting people. https://t.co/rvlTcugtVo
