Before you go to the Marriage Registry or Licensed Church to marry a single father/mother/divorcee/widower, make sure you do due diligence. Walk me with and I will tell you why.

For a single father/ mother or divorcee, make sure you engage a good lawyer to carry out due diligence for you to ensure that they have completed their divorce proceedings and the marriage has been completely dissolved. Ensure to get a copy of their divorce proceedings and documents are verified at the Court registry where the proceedings were conducted.

Without this, you cannot legally and validly marry them and if you do, their partner has a right of action against you. It can be a proceeding to join you as a co-respondent for committing adultery with their partner and you will be liable to pay damages for depriving them the consort of their partner.

You can also be sued for enticement and habouring and if found to be in the wrong, you will be liable to pay damages. The fact that they have been separated for years or that you are not aware that a dissolution of marriage has not been concluded is not an excuse to escape this liability under the law.

Note: that this is only applicable to single fathers/mothers who have been married before and their marriage was a statutory marriage.

For a widow/widower: do not marry them until you are satisfied that indeed their partners are dead. Evidence of burial, death certificate among other things are what you should demand for and verify before you agree to marry them. Not doing this, you might be falling into the traps of people who marry acclaimed divorcees who have not completed their due process of dissolution before remarrying. Because if the partner whom they claimed had died suddenly shows up, you might as well be liable as a co-adulterer or be sued for enticement and habouring; and your marriage can be invalidated.

So the moment a person says they are divorced or their partner is dead, ensure you do due diligence. Don’t let what is reportedly happening to Daddyfreeze happen to you in the future. It might not be something good for your image and your children in the future.

Look well before you leap.

Whenever anyone accuses you of anything publicly and you are tempted to respond, please your first port of call should be your lawyer. If your lawyer thinks you should respond, then let him draft the response for you, and if your lawyer thinks you shouldn’t, best believe that you must not respond.

Let your accuser either be starved of the expected responses or reactions. It hurts them more. If you can’t cope with the accusation hanging around your neck, there are two options available for you:

1. Let your lawyer do the Cease and Desist or Demand for Retraction and Apology. If they refuse, file an action for defamation of character.

2. Let your lawyer do a Petition to the Police for Cybercrime.

Let your accuser be the one to prove their accusations. Do not put yourself in the defensive position to debunk whatever accusations made against you.
