Dear Director General, @officialnyscng
On behalf of all Muslims, I am writing to bring to your attention that changing a woman’s surname to her husband’s name after marriage in place of her father’s name is totally prohibited in Islam.
Islam forbids a woman from using anyone’s name as her father’s name. However, before a married woman is considered eligible to serve or be posted to the state where her husband resides, she is required to change her name on her NYSC discharge certificate something that is completely against Islamic teachings.
This is the second time I am writing to the NYSC management on this matter, yet nothing has changed.
Many married women have been denied the opportunity to serve because of this issue of name change. It is important to understand that this policy has prevented many women especially in the North from going for service, as their husbands neither allow them to serve in another state nor agree to have their names changed.
I believe everyone knows that every Nigerian has the right to religious freedom and protection of their faith and dignity but in this case, nothing has been done to uphold that right.
If a valid marriage certificate is provided, that should be enough. Alternatively, the NYSC can require such women to report in the state where their husbands reside for verification but forcing them to change their names is completely against Islamic law.
Therefore, I appeal to the Director-General of NYSC to look into this matter and make the necessary adjustments.
I also call on all senators, representatives, and northern leaders with influence to take this issue to the appropriate authorities for review.
Thank you.
