The Marrow Thieves- Interpretation #1: it is written in the context of a dystopian future because Indigenous history & culture has often been branded as something that is "out of this world" or "not real." This "future" is really being used to portray their past history #sdsuYA

@ProfAngelMatos Good question! Personally, I believe the Bonner sisters were left off too easy-what they did to Miel was inexcusable & morally wrong, regardless of their own truths. YA literature has the tendency to give some characters a "happy/ forgiving ending" even when they don't deserve it

The closure that Miel, Sam, & the Bonner sisters had with releasing their truths that belonged to them was a powerful read! As much as I experienced reader rage with Ivy Bonner & wanted her to get killed off, she turned out to also be hurting- just like Miel🌹🌹🌹#sdsuYA

The Way He Looks- I was hooked from beginning to end! I enjoyed how it was an international film & showed the dynamic between disability & falling in love. The relationship between Leonardo and Gabriel was innocent and real despite differences... L+G forever! #teenfilmsdsu

Pariah had many heart-wrenching moments-most of them being the interactions she had with her mom. It baffles me how LGBTQ kids/adults aren't accepted or loved by their family, especially by their parents. The "I'll pray for you" narrative in these situations is B.S. #teenfilmsdsu

First half of Release: Why can't Adam get over Enzo? Like, why him??? Enzo clearly 1) doesn't care about Adam, 2) is selfish, and 3) is trash. Linus is clearly the EEDG who cares, loves, and supports Adam (& much more); yet, he has a hard time seeing it because of Enzo #sdsuYA

Hmmm, "It Follows." I'm not really sure WHAT the overall message is. People shouldn't have sex? Is "it" an allegory for STDs? This reminded me a lot of "Nightmare on Elm Street" when Tina gets murdered after having sex, alluding to that cliche of "paying a price" #teenfilmsdsu

Oh man, Inan is super shady boots! I do not know what to make of his character or how to feel about him. Like, not only is Tzain suspicious of him but so is his own sister, Amari. She basically warns Zélie about Inan by saying "I know my brother"... As in, RUN AWAY Zél #sdsuYA

I had never watched Jennifer's Body in its entirety and let me just say- WOW, what did I watch?! The message that came to mind: girls are possessions AND men have only used women for their advancement and advantage. What a great way to ring in Women's History Month! #teenfilmsdsu

The Hero's Journey vibes are strong in this book! There are many moments where the characters are faced with some kind of obstacle and then they "magically" get saved by something or someone. Each character is strong in their own way- whether they wield magic or not #sdsuYA

The most WTF moments in Nightmare on Elm Street: Tina's death & Rod not helping her, an alcoholic mother, the "he's dead honey because mommy killed him" part, Nancy's dramatic booby trap, Freddy's shape-shifting skills, AND that true nightmare of an ending #teenfilmsdsu

"Maybe he was right, and I was different somehow"(310)- I saw this as the moment of Darius' rebirth into who he always was. It's nice to see how visiting Iran and his family helped him "open up that well inside him." Represents those special moments with family & friends! #sdsuYA

ugh the stigma associated with mental illness: WHY??? Darius and his father are judged by Babou for taking their depression medication. It just goes to show how cultures often have dramatic misrepresentations of mental illness... Especially if they "can't" control it #sdsuYA

I had no idea who Stephen Kellner was in the novel until I learned it was Darius' father! He refers to his dad by his name, sees the differences between them, & claims that his dad is "disappointed in him"- clues to the type of unstable father-son relationship they have #sdsuYA

I have always found it strange how they all became pretty close within a few hours; yet, they believe these new found friendships will end just like their detention. Major themes about maintaining the "status quo" and caring about what other people think about you! #teenfilmsdsu

"Rizzo got a bun in the oven"- this is how chisme starts! To think that Marty was going to "take it to the grave" but she yells it out and tells Sonny, who then tells others. Classic story of 1) fake friends and 2) don't let others know your business! #teenfilmsdsu

I enjoyed the way the "Ants" passage (pg.198) was written! Xiomara is having a sort of out-of-body experience as she compares herself to ants & tries to be resilient against her situation. She tries to be small like an ant; yet, her Mamí is the force that can destroy her #sdsuYA

A boy that lives within a masculinity complex. A naive girl who just wants to be loved. A boy with major daddy issues. The characters in "Rebel Without a Cause" all deal with their own personal demons & cause drama at the expense of others. Typical high school story!#teenfilmsdsu
