Some states are more aggressive than others with such practices, which creates unacceptable disparities for the more scrupulous states who seem to pay attention to the intent of #Medicaid law.
It’s time to close these loopholes, once and for all.
During my time at @cmsgov long ago, I wrote a regulation designed to shut down exploitative #Medicaid financing practices that were never statutorily intended.
State Medicaid revenue maximization schemes like the ones discussed in yesterday’s article by @nytimes undermine #Congressional intent and inappropriately bleed federal taxpayer dollars.
This well-written article documents many of the challenges that dementia #caregivers must face. It also delivers validation and hope, both of which are desperately needed among those caring for a loved one with #dementia.

#Ageism is defined by the @WHO as “the stereotypes (how we think), prejudices (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) towards others or oneself based on age.”
“If resentment and guilt arise - show myself grace.”
These words of self-compassion are one person’s takeaway message from last week’s Caregiver Appreciation Day in Norfolk, VA. 🙏

Dr. Blight is a former owner of a home care company and now a professor at Shenandoah University in VA.
Yesterday I was in NYC for a corporate event and took the opportunity to have lunch with Karl Weber of Rivertowns Books.
Among the topics of discussion was my next book on caregiving. 😉
I'm excited to join an amazing lineup of speakers at next week's The People Summit, by @hacking_hr. Join me for a fireside chat on Tuesday around Caregivers at Work. Admission is free, but you must register to attend.

You may have heard the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I believe we have a similar social responsibility in looking out for our vulnerable elderly as well.
Caregiving can be taxing on the one providing the care, especially when dementia has taken hold in the care receiver. This is a gentle reminder that I hope will instill patience and understanding when your outlook needs a boost.

Recently released rankings of all U.S. Presidents--by "greatness," as voted by a group of political scientists.
Top spot goes to Abraham Lincoln. I'm inclined to agree.

According to the National Institute on Aging, our bodies lose heat more quickly as we age. As we’re in the midst of winter, this is important to keep in mind when you’re caring for an aging loved one or patient.
