@DocPriyamMD Neglect of the health of women( esp married ones ) and elderly by their family members and in laws is such a common theme in rural and semi urban India that it does not shock anyone anymore
@drpraveenpsy Also the confidence sir ..you come out of medical college post pg/ post mbbs and from a sheltered environment with multiple people sharing responsibility suddenly you are thrust into a place ( Pvt practice) where you are responsible for everything ....it's overwhelming for most
During house job, paediatrics rotation was a combination of being a doctor, detective, and philanthropist all rolled into one.
After ward rounds we would often contribute money (like church offering) to help some families buy essential drugs and even food for their children.
So imagine the anger and frustration one day when nurses found a parent giving Agbo (herbal concoction) to a child who was already very unwell. Meanwhile we had been wondering why the child suddenly started having seizures, which weren’t part of the initial presentation.
The worst part is nobody knew the type of drug-drug interaction that was causing the problems. After that episode, we began scrutinising every food and drink that came in for admitted children.
It’s emotionally draining watching children suffer not from their illness alone, but from the painful mix of ignorance and poverty that surrounds them.
