Some years back I had dinner with a public school teacher who was part of the "Renewal" program in DeBlasio's NYC. The premise of this school program was bold (if doomed to fail): instead of closing the worst public schools, flood them with resources, extra teachers, new computers, the works. Less than a hundred schools got close to $800 million of extra resources from 2014-2019. And guess what?

It was a total failure. Zero test score improvement. Higher dropout rate. No improvement in 5 years.

But what this teacher told me about the day-to-day was just depressing. 8th graders who swore at her, fights in the hallways, parents who (overwhelmingly) never showed up for meetings- all the clichés about a dysfunctional, low-income nyc public school. And it just continued this way, no change. She was brought in to help fix the mess, and admitted to me there was no hope. The problems ran far deeper than whether the kids had a new iPad or enough ESL support.

DeBlasio admin shut down the program and basically hoped everyone would forget that lack of shiny new desks, laptops and an army of administrators aren't the reasons so many black/latino majority public schools fail, over and over again, all over nyc, no matter how much money is spent per student

this article seems to be making the rounds. i'm not convinced by the story it purports to tell. it reads like self-aggrandizing post facto justification wrapped up in emotive slop.

i am simply not buying this. what i will wager occurred was "this was the easy path." it was the local school and sending their daughter somewhere else would have cost money (private school) or taken a lot of time and effort to get her into and drive her to somewhere more distant.

they chose not to.

but we did not do this for our kid because we wanted to be justice warriors? not buying it.

then one day they got asked (allegedly, honestly, this whole story reads a bit pat and fake):

"why didn't you send me to a better school?" and they needed a justification that sounded noble instead of lazy.

so we get these implausible, morally grandiose claims to dress up being selfish as being selfless.

America’s corporate governance system is broken, and it’s killing public companies. Look no further than Cracker Barrel: Decades of brutal mismanagement have seen one incompetent CEO after another walk away with a massive paycheck while customers and actual shareholders take a beating.

Why does this keep happening? Because proxy advisory firms like ISS are corrupt. They blindly rubber-stamp failing boards year after year, protecting the corporate elite while burning shareholder value to the ground.

The root of the rot is index funds. There's no question that indexing one's money is a smart financial move for most people. But just because you passively index your investments doesn't mean your corporate votes should be handed over to the managers of your fund so they can play politics. Right now, passive funds hold massive, unchecked voting blocks while having zero skin in the game themselves.

It is time for a simple rewrite of the rules: We need to index the votes of index fund investors.

Passive index funds should be forced to automatically split their votes to proportionately mirror those of retail and active institutional shareholders — the people actually doing the research, risking their capital, and fighting for performance in the companies they hold shares in. No more rubber-stamping. A change like this will immediately strip corrupt gatekeepers like ISS of their toxic influence.

True accountability happens when lazy, overpaid boards actually answer to the stakeholders they represent, rather than screwing them over.

Actual, logic-driven governance when your money is passive happens when your vote passively follows the voting decisions of the actual market.

We need to stop letting passive capital protect active incompetence. By stripping index funds of their arbitrary voting power and empowering engaged investors, we will finally torch corporate cronyism and usher American capital markets into a golden age of capitalism.

The city of Spokane is refusing to waive demolition permit fees for fire victims. After losing EVERYTHING, victims have to pay $500 to cap the water and sewer lines under their burned out house. What the fuck is the point of paying taxes? Just like California, Washington uses taxpayer dollars to buy crackpipes and heroin needles for unemployed homeless drug zombies, but when you, the working class taxpayer, lose everything you have through no fault of your own, you still have to pay for this?

These city leaders are so fucking petty they'll still force fire victims to pay $35 for permission to demolish their own destroyed home. Why? You couldn't just waive it? For $35? Yeah, it's not a lot of money, but that actually makes it worse...forcing a fire victim to cough up a meager sum that in NO way actually funds the process in any meaningful way just shows that you are doing it out of spite. Just a nice little "fuck you" to the peasants.

Additionally, the state of Washington is forcing fire victims to pay sales tax to replace the items they lost in the fire. Again...why? The state was never factoring in that revenue...it never existed on the balance sheet BUT for the fire. Government is collecting a windfall from people's LOSSES. There's literally zero need to collect taxes on shit that people already owned.

Back during the mid 90's floods, the state legislature passed a sales tax exemption for victims replacing their stuff. If they don't do this in their next leg session, they all need to go. The one thing WA did is cut property tax on their burned out homes, which is the absolute least they could do.

You assholes never maintain your forests, everybody lost everything, their pets burned alive, and now you're going tack on an extra 9.1% to the cost of rebuilding their lives...for what? Not to mention the fact that a couch today costs probably 2x as much as when they first bought the one they just lost. I fucking hate these people, man.
