WAVERLEY REFIT UPDATE - NEW MASTS & WINDOWS NEEDED FOR 2026

As some followers and supporters will know Waverley's main mast above the aft deck shelter fractured on the final sailing of 2025. The top section of the mast was removed and she finished the season looking a little bit sorry for herself with a stump mast.

Following the fracture on the main mast we inspected the fore mast and have found that are now several cracks extending up the 17m mast although not individually deep collectively they show the mast is aging, we have taken the decision that the fore mast will also need replacing. It has though given great service to the ship having been fitted back in 2003 during the second phase of the Heritage Rebuild.

Waverley's timber masts help define her profile and character; they create her wonderful timeless silhouette. As many will know we fly her name pennant from the fore mast and proudly fly her house flag from the main mast. On special occasions we dress Waverley with many flags from the masts and create an impressive sight.

This winter's refit was already shaping up to be expensive, but we now must include both masts bringing a total expected cost to over £1.5m. Sourcing suitable trees is not easy although we are now hopeful that new masts can be fitted before May 2026. It is expected that the cost of replacing both masts will be around £50,000, funds which we don't yet have.

Over the past few years several repairs have been required to most of the timber Dining Saloon window frames. The current windows were installed in 1995 and have lasted well but following an inspection at the end of the season we have decided that ongoing repairs are no longer viable and 13 of the 16 windows now urgently need replacing. This work was also not expected or budgeted for. Each of the 13 windows will cost £6,000 to produce and install in Waverley. Given time scales are tight we have already placed an order for the new frames.

Given the level of expenditure on Waverley in the coming months, that will exceed £1.5m, we have launched a Masts & Windows Winter Appeal to raise a total of £135,000 to fund the replacement masts and Dining Saloon windows. While we could look at alternative materials Waverley's owning charity wishes to preserve her as much as possible true to her 1947 style and character and therefore retain her authentic features such as timber masts and window frames. We are therefore appealing for support and asking for donations towards this appeal.

"Inflation rise takes the UK closer to debt-crisis cliff edge" – my latest @Telegraph column

Britain is heading for a very serious fiscal crisis – not unlike the 1976 fiasco which saw this country go "cap in hand" to the International Monetary Fund for a bail-out.

Government borrowing costs are now higher than they were in 1998 - but the national debt is some 3-times bigger as a share of GDP than it was back then.

That's why the government's debt interest bill is now so massive – twice what we spend on defence each year, more than we spend on schools.

PLUS: Over two-thirds of the money the government is borrowing each year is now being spent on interest payments on already outstanding debt.

AND: The UK's uniquely high share of "index-linked" debt – with interest payments that go up with RPI inflation – means that as inflation rises, our already crippling debt service costs rise even more.

The vast majority of our political and media class are either incapable of understanding the now brightly-flashing warning signs - signs I have outlined in the Telegraph and elsewhere many, many times – or are determined to ignore them if they do.

What I am saying isn't party political, nor about left and right or who has the right "values".

It's about trying to avert a major fiscal meltdown and related systemic crisis - which will cause huge economic and societal damage, and during which the least well off will suffer most.
