Very important.

This is largely, but not entirely surprising.

We are accustomed, of course, to Trump and his administration giving Israel a pass on matters Israel-Palestine.

But Trump has also been unwavering in his opposition to annexation, and E-1 is tantamount to annexation.

The construction of E-1 is not taking place in isolation.

Thousands of Bedouins are being or about to be displaced from the area (Khan Al Ahmar being the most prominent), and Palestinian villages sealed by impenetrable fences.

A segregated road is nearing completion, after which there will be one road exclusively for Palestinians, and another exclusively for Israelis. The Palestinian road will be sealed, like the autobahn to Berlin pre-1989.

Once the road is complete, Area C in the occupied West Bank around E&1 will be totally inaccessible to Palestinians, and only accessible to Israelis.

Massive infrastructures - multi-lane expressways, tunnels, interchanges - are seamlessly integrating the area around E-1 into pre-1967 Israel, while fragmenting Palestine.

When all this will be completed, all, or almost all of Area C between Jerusalem and the Jordan River Valley will be virtually cleansed of Palestinians, under the sole, untrammeled control of Israel, and fully integrated into Green Line Israel. The only distinction between this reality and annexation is the use of the term "annexation".

If Trump remains as adamant as he has been in his opposition to annexation, he also must also oppose E-1.

This is one to watch.

Scoop: Israeli sources say that, in compliance with President Trump’s wishes, Israel has quietly withdrawn in recent weeks from the so-called Orange Line in Gaza to the original Yellow Line stipulated in last October’s ceasefire deal.

Under that deal, Israel controls 53% of Gaza. But in an effort to limit Hamas’s room to maneuver, Israel had subsequently extended its control to more than 60%, creating what became known as the Orange Line. (PM Netanyahu has put the figure closer to 70%, but this appears to have been an overstatement.)

With Israel now in an election season, Netanyahu has sought to emphasize points of difference with Trump over Gaza to placate his political base. In a video to supporters, he declared that Israel will not withdraw from Gaza until Hamas completely disarms.

Nor has Netanyahu publicly acknowledged his willingness—in compliance with Trump’s wishes—to refrain from strikes against Hamas beyond the Yellow Line absent an imminent threat, apparently believing such restraint would be politically unpopular.

בארבע השנים האחרונות נשאלתי פעמים רבות לגבי הביקורת שהטחתי בפני מובילי המחאה נגד ההפיכה המשפטית. הטיעון שלי היה פשוט – הההפיכה הייתה הכלי הסיפוח היה המטרה והם סירבו לקשר מסיבות שונות בין הדברים. שום דבר לא היה בחזקת הפתעה למי שהכיר את שתי הסוגיות. כבר בנובמבר 2022 כתבתי על הקשר בין ניהול הסכסוך וההפיכה המשטרית שהובילו ל-7 באוקטובר. כתבתי כי „צמצום הסכסוך” ללא ממד טריטוריאלי אינו מצמצם דבר. לא נדרשה לכך נבואה, אלא הבנה פשוטה: סכסוך לאומי וטריטוריאלי אינו נעלם באמצעות היתרי עבודה, הקלות כלכליות וכסף. אפשר לקנות שקט זמני; אי אפשר לקנות ויתור על מטרות לאומיות ואידיאולוגיות.

לא סעיף אחד נשאר על הנייר. כולם קודמו, הואצו או זכו לחסות ממשלתית. „שטח הפנים” של החיכוך התרחב, האלימות גברה, והסיפוח הזוחל הפך למדיניות ממשלתית גלויה. גם אחרי האסון, הממשלה לא החליפה תפיסה – היא רק הקצינה אותה.
זו איננה תזכורת לשאלה מי צדק. זו תביעה ל��פסיק להציג כ„פרגמטיות” מדיניות שכבר הוכחה ככישלון קטלני. הממשלה לא ניהלה את הסכסוך. היא טיפחה אותו, הרחיבה אותו – והעבירה לציבור את החשבון.

נראה שהממשלה שתקום תגיע לשיאים חדשים באימוץ המושגים המכובסים, ובראשם "צמצום הסכסוך" ו"השלום הכלכלי". השימוש במושגים אלה על ידי ממשלת נתניהו הצפויה אינו אלא מסך עשן, שנועד להסתיר את המשך החיכוך ואת המשך הסיפוח הזוחל, עד ליצירת של מדינה אחת לא שוויונית. ייתכן כי בחירות 2022 ייזכרו כ"נכבה'' של הדמוקרטיה הישראלית.

🚨 On Wednesday, Israeli settlers seized the home of the Palestinian Basha family in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City after Israeli courts ordered their eviction. The family, which consists of six households, most of whom are elderly, have lived in the building since the 1930s. Their eviction followed legal proceedings initiated by the General Custodian, a governmental body within the Israeli Ministry of Justice.

In a video circulating online, Rabbi Avishai Zruya, head of the Yeshivat Ateret Yerushalayim settler organization, is seen leading settlers in a prayer and affixing to the building’s entrance a mezuzah—a Jewish ritual object traditionally placed on a doorpost, symbolically marking the newly seized building as a Jewish space. He declares: “Today, on the eve of Tisha B’Av… we come here with dignity and splendor, in the fullness of our Jewishness and faith.” Tisha B’Av is a Jewish day of mourning commemorating the destruction of the Jewish Temples.

Ateret Yerushalayim is closely connected to the Ateret Cohanim settler organization, which plays a central role in the forced eviction of Palestinians and settler takeover of their homes in the Old City and surrounding Palestinian neighborhoods, including Silwan.

This is what settler violence looks like in East Jerusalem: no need for settler pogroms or rampages, instead, discriminatory laws, state institutions, courts, and police are all utilized to forcibly remove Palestinians from their homes and seize them for Jewish settlement—all under the veneer of legality. Israeli law allows Jews to reclaim property allegedly owned before 1948, while denying Palestinians the same right to recover property they lost in West Jerusalem and elsewhere.

Hamas’s newly appointed leader, Khalil al‑Hayya, is a hardliner expected to double down on the group’s armed‑resistance narrative and extremist positions. Closely aligned with the Islamic Republic of Iran and firmly rooted in Hamas’s least‑pragmatic wing, he is now being marketed by the organization as a “man of the people” whose personal losses (four of his children killed since October 7) supposedly grant him credibility and make him representative of ordinary Gazans. In reality, he lives comfortably in Qatar, far from Gaza’s devastation and the consequences of Hamas’s decisions. His first speech after being appointed, aired on Al Jazeera, was a barrage of incendiary rhetoric and empty slogans that angered many Palestinians in Gaza. He laid out a fantasy of maximalist goals: reconstructing Gaza, liberating Jerusalem and all of Palestine, reconciling with the PA and PLO, partnering with Arab states, and continuing “resistance.” It was a laundry list detached from reality.

One remark revealed Hamas’s true posture toward the transitional process that followed the Trump‑brokered ceasefire. Al‑Haya declared that Gaza’s reconstruction is a “right” for Hamas and Gazans and that no political price should be paid for it. The message was unmistakable: Hamas will not disarm, will not demilitarize, and has no intention of honoring the commitments it supposedly accepted when signing the ceasefire.

More importantly, his statement exposed the grotesque sense of entitlement that Hamas, and parts of the broader Palestinian political culture, have developed toward foreign aid, development money, and reconstruction funds. For years, well‑intentioned NGO support and international assistance have inadvertently helped entrench Hamas’s rule and prolong its reign of terror. A fundamentally different approach is needed; one that strips away this entitlement and ensures foreign aid serves genuine humanitarian needs rather than reinforcing a fascistic terrorist organization that’s forestalling progress, holding its people hostage, and perpetuating political tumult and instability.

Again, since this must be stressed—Benayahu Mellet and Yuval Ezra did not deserve to die. There must be consequences for the Palestinians who killed them, unless it can be demonstrated that they were acting in direct self defense. The Palestinians who were killed did not deserve to die either, and sadly there is little chance that their killers will be investigated or treated as those who killed the Israelis. But there is no question that today's tragedy is a direct result of this government's settlement policies, its encouragement of the most radical and ideological settlers in the West Bank, its embrace of Israel pushing not only into unsettled parts of Area C, but Areas A and B as well, and its practice of never imposing consequences on Jews who violate Israeli law in the West Bank. 7/
