Poor rest defence structure ofc, but for both goals, totally incredible on-ball decisions made. Rest defence is as much good decision making as it is ensuring good structure.
@TacticNotes Totally agree. VVD needed to step up earlier to put pressure on Osula which either cuts off passing angles, makes the pass more difficult, or simply stops him from progressing up the field.
This is not an issue if Gravenberch either decides to shoot or play a simple pass to Szoboszlai. If he doesn't play a square pass across the box and loses the ball, the counter doesn't happen at all. Better on-ball decision making cuts this problem out from the source, not a DM.
Watch how empty Liverpool's midfield is prior to the Newcastle counterattack that led to the opening goal.
Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, and Wirtz all commit to Liverpool's attack making it so easy for Newcastle to bypass us and score.
Can't be risk-taking in attack without anything coming from it. If you're going to break into the final third, make the line breaking pass or take the shot even if it results in a goal kick. The worst thing you can do is hand the ball back to your opponent.

@SamiHenchoz Exactly, simply having a DM doesn't solve that situation. For the 1st goal, VVD needed to step up earlier, that's what Iraola expects. For the 2nd, someone simply needed to put in a tackle or even just take a foul. Was more poor decision making rather than personnel issues imo.
@KingKenny_20@stehoare Dunno what that has to do with anything since heatmaps show the areas players typically spend a lot of time during a game, and the running stats are per 90.
@Jon_Mackenzie@here_for_LFC Yeah I get that. I just feel like a lot of Liverpool fans have an obsession with specialist DMs due to memories of peak Fabinho, but I feel 1) football has generally moved on from that and 2) he played in a midfield 3 which again is a different system with different needs.
@KingKenny_20@stehoare If I asked you which of these heatmaps and running performance stats belonged to Tyler Adams and which one is Alex Scottβs, which would you say. Is there a significant difference?
@Jon_Mackenzie@here_for_LFC PSG have won the past 2 UCLs without a specialist DM that just sits in front of the defence. Slot also didnβt need one to win the PL. So itβs definitely scalable, you just need the right profiles.
Curtis Jones' exit, the significance of Liverpool losing a Scouse presence which has existed for so long, their faith in teenager Trey Nyoni, and why Andoni Iraola doesn't believe he needs a new specialist No 6 given his tactical set-up.

Fans are only excited about this cuz itβs a transfer update, but this doesnβt help us at all with what we need rn. It just shows the general unhappiness is down to fans wanting any sort of transfer, not transfers that make sense. This is the most un-Liverpool transfer offer.
π¨ Liverpool made offer in recent days to sign Yankuba Minteh from Brighton & Hove Albion. 22yo #BHAFC winger currently injured but among #LFC options for wide attacking areas - bid worth Β£50m turned down. W/ @AndyNaylorBHAFC@JamesPearceLFC@TheAthleticFC https://t.co/5bzTOfdfu0
Guessing not a lot would agree, but if you want to avoid another Tyler Morton situation, then we have to provide adequate opportunities for prospects like Nyoni. He deserves a chance, but having 4 senior CMs ahead of him vying for a spot in a double pivot would've been difficult.
This feels like Trey Nyoniβs season #LFC
Piece on why Jones leaving may open up space, Nyoniβs need for minutes + why a loan move was considered but now ruled out.

@s79uk Agreed. I guess Iβve just tempered my expectations based on past windows and we should know how Liverpool operate by now. I believe weβll get at least 1 more winger but Iβm not expecting much else tbh. It isnβt ideal, but I also prefer to not stress too much about hypotheticals.
Probably cuz those on TAW and Redmen have painted a very bleak picture for the upcoming season, constantly repeating how worried they are. You canβt keep doing that and then be surprised that a lot of the fanbase feel the same wayβ¦ I stopped listening as it was getting too much.
Quite shocked by this. I get the lack of action in a transfer window can imbue pessimism, but we have made the managerial change most supporters were after. Didnβt expect us to be rock bottom of the optimism league.
@s79uk I agree, but Iβm not in a state of doom & gloom as it seems like a lot of fans are. Take RB/CB; we apparently were in a βcrisisβ but it only took an Araujo loan+good games from Jacquet/Frimpong to relax fans. Just think more level-headedness and less extreme negativity is needed.
@SamiHenchoz At least we know Liverpool are trying to address areas that we know need addressing while fans of other clubs donβt know if they are looking to do anything else. Itβs the curse of FIFA and FM that people think major transfers can be done with a click of a button.
Hopefully some of you on TAW can stop saying how bad Frimpong and Gakpo are and start realising that they weren't being played to their strengths last season.
Another top first half display from the Reds as they take a two goal advantage into the dressing room with them at half time. Frimpong, Gakpo and Jacquet the standouts πͺ

Trent Alexander Arnold looking so pissed off with life right now
Not sure if he was influenced by his brother but putting personal finances aside no one benefited from that move to Madrid, absolutely no one
@Rimbeux@Knox_Harrington I think Macca could work in this role, not as a long-term solution, but remains to be seen. On the balance of things I think getting two more wingers and a backup to Isak is a bigger priority than getting another 10. I think Hugo could be another option for 10 when he comes back.
