I’ve been thinking for a while about how to structure this thread because I wanted to cover #Nyoni’s impact both in possession and out of possession.

There’s simply too much material to fit into one thread without making it exhausting to read, so I decided to split it into separate parts. Long tactical threads can be difficult to get through, and I don’t want this one to feel like a chore.

This part will focus on how Trey Nyoni leaves his mark on the team in possession - how he creates freedom for the full-backs, manipulates the opposition press, and facilitates ball progression through different variations and mechanisms.

Rio doesn’t have any issues defensively; he understands the responsibilities of his role. But if you base the lion’s share of your attacks on a teenager, you have to accept that it will come at a physical cost, which in turn will lead to a drop in his work rate out of possession.

Last night was a perfect example of that. Our attacking threat needs to be more diversified, built around several players and something more than individual bursts of brilliance #LFC

I think you’re expecting results from a complex defensive system too quickly. For the 2–0 goal, the defensive line did a good job of covering for that disruption, but Tsimikas behaved like an amateur by playing the attacker onside.
Rio was aware of his responsibilities and the player he needed to track, but he simply didn’t have the legs to do it, which is understandable given his attacking workload. There are always trade-offs, and the key is to provide proper cover. Unfortunately, our LB completely undermined the whole system.
What I’ve written still isn’t the finished product, but it’s certainly important in critical moments like these, which will inevitably happen. The problem started higher up the pitch, and that’s also an area we’re still constantly working to improve. This system will work brilliantly, but it needs time.

In all of this, even Virgil seemed to lose his bearings, caught off guard by the rotation, the pace of change Nyoni’s (half-joking, half-serious 😉). That’s why a CM signing could only really have happened as a way of adding depth and greater functionality to the midfield.

Nyoni is a unicorn - a player who can completely change the game. I think Iraola will realise that with time and move Szoboszlai to RB, which would help us balance the team and bring that playmaking ability back into the defensive line. That’s crucial if we want to build from the back.

Gravenberch should play as a carrier because we’re living in an era where progression is increasingly built around carrying the ball - a more direct element of the game.

This squad is capable of achieving great things, but it needs good health, a proper understanding of how the players complement each other, and total commitment from everyone #LFC

Iraola is working on something really special out of possession. I’ll analyse the second half again tomorrow, but he’s combining different orientations within a single sequence. It’s an extremely complex and time-consuming process to develop because the players’ reference points are constantly shifting

Whatever side of the Florian Wirtz debate you’re on, one thing is impossible to deny — Liverpool are a much better team when he’s on the pitch. When you lack deep buildup/security as a team nobody knits everything better than him. #LFC
