I did a double take when I saw this…

Jump rope may not be among the most prestigious or widely followed sports.

But it demands extraordinary fitness, agility, coordination and reflexes & perhaps says something about a country’s broader sporting culture.

Like me, I suspect many of us have grown accustomed to seeing clips of athletes from other countries, notably the West, but increasingly China too, displaying astonishing skill and dexterity.

I confess I hadn’t expected any clip on the subject to feature an Indian team.

And then I discovered that, late last month in China, our team won gold in an event at a global competition.

Displaying not just athleticism, but creativity, bringing a uniquely Indian flavour to the sport…

After the ‘Unstoppable Tukaram’ programme in Pune on Saturday, IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe was reportedly at his brother Ashok’s home with friends when he suddenly asked, “Will you have tea?” @Tukaram_IndIAS

According to Amit Ruke, who shared the video, Mundhe saw his brother preparing to make tea and stopped him, choosing to make tea himself for everyone instead.

With other family members away, Mundhe personally prepared and served tea to his brother and friends.

The simple moment has drawn attention online, with many appreciating the senior bureaucrat’s down-to-earth approach away from official protocol.

Aurangzeb asked, “Who is Mati Das?”

Bhai Mati Das stepped forward and replied, “I am Mati Das. If my Guru permits, I can sit here and tell you everything happening from Delhi to Lahore. I can shake your fortress to its very foundation.”

Aurangzeb growled in anger and, to force him into religious conversion, threatened him with brutal torture. Boiling cauldrons of hot oil were brought before him to create fear in his mind. But men of faith do not fear death. For them, sacrificing life for Dharma is greater than life itself.

When all of Aurangzeb’s threats failed and every attempt proved useless, he became furious. He summoned the Qazi and asked, “Tell me, what punishment should be given to him?”

The Qazi pronounced:

“Since this infidel refuses to accept Islam, he should be sawn apart like a piece of wood.”

Aurangzeb immediately ordered his soldiers to carry out the sentence.

At Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, Bhai Mati Das was tightly bound between two wooden posts, and the soldiers began sawing him alive from the head downward.

Yet not a single cry escaped his lips.

Aurangzeb once again said,

“There is still time. Accept Islam, and you will be spared. You will be rewarded with wealth and riches.”

The fearless Mati Das replied,

“As long as I live, I will never abandon my faith.”

Such was the courage of Dharma Veer Bhai Mati Das.

The place where he was martyred is remembered today as Bhai Mati Das Chowk.
