On June 15th, apartment buildings in Toronto will begin to display colour-coded RentSafe signs, backed by the city being able to use remedial action or financial penalties if landlords don’t maintain safe and healthy homes for their tenants- holding corporate landlords to account, ensuring city hall is addressing the problems and providing vital information to prospective renters. I was proud to bring this initiative to city council, and am so grateful for the support we achieved to finally get it done!
I know it can feel that way, but in the last 15-20 years:
Slips and Wavedecks
HTO Park
Queens Quay West redesign
Sugar Beach
Sherbourne Common North/South
East Bayfront
West Don Lands
Corktown Common
Leslie Lookout Park
Biidasige Park
Don Mouth Naturalization/Flood Protection
The operators of the pickleball and padel courts at Rosehill and Yonge got hit with a $500,000 tax bill because of a provincial MPAC assessment. This is unfair and wrong. Given that the development market is stalled, there are sites across our city that we all want to see animated and put to community use - rather than sit for years as empty or derelict eyesores. I’ll be moving a motion at council this week to help prevent this from happening again, while supporting Fairgrounds now to remain in our community.
Last night, Dan Seljak, my amazing team & I turned Toronto’s city council chambers into a cinema-and enjoyed a thoughtful conversation about ways to improve our city with a packed room of caring, creative & engaged residents. It was truly beautiful. No marshmallows were involved.
Little Jamaica should be respected, reflected and celebrated in new Eglinton Crosstown LRT stations such as Cedarvale, Oakwood and Fairbank. I’m working on a motion to bring to the next TTC board meeting.
For individual condominium units being offered for rent, and for buildings built after 2018, the absence of reliable Residential Tenancies Act protection against future rent increases (and thus from arbitrary eviction in the form of a sharp increase) is a MASSIVE defect.
We need to ensure that mental health crises are addressed effectively & safely. The Mobile Crisis Intervention Teams are a critical tool to keep people safe. I'll be working closely with healthcare professionals & police to defend the program from closure. https://t.co/ZSmiHDMgzc
The government will not unlock housing by undermining tenants' security of tenure. This Bill is a new low that signals existential threats to every renter in Ontario. We need to go all out to stop it https://t.co/h3kB9RjBTZ #ONpoli#TorCen#Bill60

The Ford government already eliminated rent control for buildings built after 2018. They are now taking steps to eliminate rent control in Ontario altogether. This is shameful and disgusting given the affordability crisis that so many people are facing.
The Ford government's announcement today is an attack on tenants in the province.
It is no surprise that they made the announcement next to Tony Irwin, from the landlord lobby FRPO. Landlords lobbied for this & Ford is giving them what they want.
We are going to fight back
Without security of tenure rules, no Ontario tenant would have a right to stay in their apartment beyond their initial 1-year lease - it would be entirely up to the landlord. Long-term tenancies would simply cease to be a thing. Tenants become a fully-disempowered transient class
Toronto shouldn't need Doug's permission to fix basic problems. Thanks @JoshMatlow for the opportunity to talk about an innovative path forward for our city!
We’d love to fix Toronto - If Doug Ford would just get out of the way.

There are so many people who rely on the small fruit markets at Yonge and Davisville- really good prices for what you get there. We’ve made a point of reaching out to them directly to support their ability to remain in our community.
The focus is often solely on height and…
The government is conspicuously sidestepping any direct denial that the proposed changes to the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act will not AFFECT any other Provincial Park or Conservation Reserves. It'd be a simple enough commitment to make!

While I agree that water safety should absolutely be part of the curriculum, this tragic drowning should also be a wake up call to the province to finally fund our school pools and keep them open. Please support our petition here: https://t.co/uCxIqvkden
Holy fig! It turns out, this isn't just about Wasaga Beach Procvincial Park!
The Ontario government is targeting the law that protects ALL of Ontario's Provincial Parks from SECRET or surprise selloffs. 🧵👇
