1. Lydia Azuele Akanbodiipo Kugblenu (Mrs.), a physical education teacher who, aged 27, became the first woman to win parliamentary elections in Ghana in 1969.

2. She entered Parliament on the ticket of K. A. Gbedemah's National Alliance of Liberals, the largest opposition party in Ghana's Second Republic, representing Sandema.

3. Prior to her becoming MP, ten other women MPs had served in Ghana’s parliament of the First Republic.

4. But unlike, Lydia Akanbodiipo, none of them won their seats in a competitive parliamentary election.

5. Their easy passage into Parliament was made possible by the Representation of the People (Women Members) Bill, which became law in June 1960 under Nkrumah. This legislation enabled ten women to enter Parliament unopposed. The most notable beneficiary of the Bill was Mrs. Susana Alhassan, Ghana and Africa's first female cabinet minister.

6. Breaking the glass ceiling to serve as Chief Whip for the main opposition in Parliament, Lydia Akanbodiipo, among others, worked tirelessly to secure the passage of the Labour (Amendment) Bill, which extended paid maternity leave for working women to three months.

7. On the government side of the house sat the only other woman in the parliament of the Second Republic, Catherine Katuni Tedam for Chiana-Paga.

8. Although Catherine entered Parliament by winning a by-election, her election followed unusual circumstances. Her uncle, C. K. Tedam, a former CPP member, had originally won the seat in the 1969 general election. However, a court later disqualified him because of a ban on former CPP members. Catherine subsequently won the ensuing by-election on the Progress Party ticket.

9. With no monumental edifice standing in her name, nor any cash stashed away to pass on to her heirs, we can only keep her memory alive. And so may her name be known: Akanbodiipo.
