I don’t know if I can write a full review of @wuthering_hts before seeing it once or twice more, but what I will say right now is that @emeraldfennell’s adaptation DOES have its very own NECESSARY role in our digestion of Brontë and of the process of creation.

I think of it as the wild, wishful, through the looking glass dream you have about them all after falling asleep in your chair having just finished the book. Not literal, but between the lines and what could have been; the visceral physicality of torment and of touching a love ephemeral BECAUSE it was only a dream.

In Brontë, Cathy and Heathcliff only ever had the dream. They never truly consummated that love.

And as we all left the theatre, we feel as bereft as they did, suddenly jerked awake, bereft, stranded, and haunted by their ghosts as they haunted each other.

As heartbroken as I am, I’m grateful to Jacob, Margot, and Emerald for being part of my dreams. #WutheringHeightsMovie
