A young man came to the Prophet ﷺ and complained "O Messenger of Allah, my father keeps taking my money."

The Prophet ﷺ replied "Bring your father to me."

As the father was walking toward the gathering, Jibreel (AS) came to the Prophet ﷺ and said:

"When the father arrives, ask him about the words he was whispering to himself on the way here."

When the father arrived, the Prophet ﷺ asked him:

"Is what your son says true?"

The old man replied:

"O Messenger of Allah, if only he knew where that money goes. I spend it on his aunt, a poor woman who has nobody left to support her."

Then the Prophet ﷺ asked:

"What were you saying to yourself as you walked here?"

The father said:

"I composed some verses."

The Prophet ﷺ asked him to recite them.

The father said:

"O my son...

I fed you when you were small.
I carried you when you could not walk.
I stayed awake through the night whenever you were sick.
I feared that even a breeze might harm you.

Everything I earned, I spent on you.
Every strength I had, I poured into raising you.

I waited my whole life to see you become a man.

And when that day finally came...

You met me with harshness.
You frowned at me.
You treated me as though I owed you something.

I wish you had at least treated me the way a good neighbor treats his neighbor."

The Prophet ﷺ was overcome with emotion. Tears flowed from his eyes and soaked his beard.

He then turned to the son and said:

"You and your wealth belong to your father."

Today, on Father's Day, remember

Most of us remember what our fathers gave us.

Very few ever stop to think what it cost them.The gifts we remember lasted a day. The sacrifices they made lasted a lifetime.
