This wasn’t that long ago. Seeing it in color enhances our perspective. #OTD 69 years ago, Elizabeth Eckford, part of the Little Rock Nine, was a 15-year-old Black girl on her way to school.

The white people in this photo didn’t want to go to school with her. They classified Elizabeth as ��other,” “unwanted,” “outcast,” “ni**er.” Imagine what the yellers are saying. Still, today, these labels and more reinforce hatred, bigotry, and racism.

Somebody is yelling that someone else shouldn’t be “here” right now. And wherever violent words persist, other forms of violence preceded or follow.

Honor Elizabeth and the Little Rock Nine today. Guard your mouth. Guard your heart. Guard your conscience. Grow in courage. Show up for people being violated by low-thinking and brazen inhumanity.

Sixty-nine years ago today, Elizabeth Eckford was 15 years old and simply trying to go to school.

This image is painful to look at, but necessary to remember.

What I see is not only hatred. I see courage, dignity, and the strength to keep moving when the world around you is trying to push you back.

Progress is never guaranteed. Rights can be challenged. History can be distorted. And generations can become comfortable with injustices they did not personally create.

That is why courage still matters.

Honor Elizabeth Eckford. Honor the Little Rock Nine. And let their example remind us that human dignity must always be defended.
