“We need to train dedicated women's health specialists—not just reproductive experts.”
Fascinating, smart essay by Dr. Elizabeth Poynor on reimagining women's health care

The journalists of @ColumbiaSpec and @WKCRFM are the best of the best; I’m in awe of what incredible work they’re doing while also trying to keep themselves and each other safe. Isabella is running her newsroom better than many professionals.
The Columbia Journalism Review does not cover events at Columbia, but we don’t ignore them either. Read @Jon_Allsop on the heroic work of the @ColumbiaSpec, and a campus in crisis https://t.co/Jn5nKLyUBV
Minimum nursing home staffing rule will soak up lots of attention today but this new Medicaid rule "requiring providers to allocate at least 80% of home- and community-based payments to direct care worker pay" is HUGE too.
Heartbreaking news: Activist Ady Barkan has died
He spent years battling ALS — and fighting to help others get health care
A true American hero
RIP https://t.co/N1heLadtrj
Hi all, this is Ady’s wife, Rachael. I’m devastated to share the news that Ady has died from complications of ALS. You probably knew Ady as a healthcare activist. But more importantly he was a wonderful dad and my life partner for 18 years. [1/4]
“So Ashley did what girls with no other options do: she did nothing.”
Incredible story that shows that rape exceptions to abortion bans are often largely theoretical—and what that means for women & girls in places like Mississippi.

And I see this new opportunity as a natural continuation of my work writing about ways our health care system can be better.
Plus, I still have some cool health pieces in the works. Excited to keep sharing occasional bylines + all the smart work we're creating at Atria!
Some personal news: I recently started a new job as Senior Manager of Content Operations at Atria, a new health care organization focused on proactive, preventive health. I get to work with the wonderful @siobhannyc (& soon @SCBegley), and I'm so excited.
Atria is all about democratizing health and science information w/ the goal of shortening the gap between when new research comes out and when it’s used in practice. As a journalist I’ve seen the importance of having access to trusted, scientifically rigorous health information.
economists studied Swedish women who got pregnant because their IUDs failed. about half of those unplanned pregnancies resulted in births, and those births lowered their income earnings by 20 percent five years out

I recently talked to some of the last high-risk OBGYNs in Idaho, where abortion bans have led to a major exodus of doctors. They're already seeing ripple effects across the health care system—and every doc I spoke with warned it could soon get worse

BREAKING: U.S. officials have approved the first over-the-counter birth control pill, a major change that will broaden access for women and teenagers. https://t.co/dRvCzrr83I
A year ago today the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. For the anniversary, I worked with @StrekKasia on this photo essay looking at what's it's like to live without abortion rights and where the fight over abortion goes next.

“What’s burning out health care workers is less the grueling conditions we practice under, and more our dwindling faith in the systems for which we work. What has been identified as occupational burnout is a symptom of a deeper collapse.”

Late to this, but honored to be included in this insightful piece from @asosin + @heavyredaction as they note the need for journalists to keep covering the toll of the pandemic—and the dangers of dismissing those most affected by it.

Many of the voters Democrats hope will participate in the midterm elections aren't following campaign ads or the evening news.
So the left is investing in a new strategy: partnering with the influencers these voters are already watching.
