THE SENATE DISSOLVES THE SECURITY AND INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE CHAIRED BY SENATOR SHEHU BUBA
The Nigerian Senate has approved the dissolution of the leadership of its Security and Intelligence Committee headed by Senator Shehu Buba. The Senate also approved the dissolution of the Air Force Committee chaired by Senator Godiya Akwashiki.
Earlier, the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, expressed dissatisfaction over the committees’ failure to submit timely reports on matters related to national security, describing the delay as a setback to the Senate’s oversight responsibilities.
Before the dissolution of the committees and their leadership, the matter was presented before the Senate chamber, where a vote was conducted. The majority voted in favor of the dissolution, giving Senate President Godswill Akpabio the mandate to dissolve the committees.
The Senate has directed other security-related committees to urgently submit their comprehensive reports within one week or face appropriate disciplinary action.
The Senate also stated that it will intensify investigations into all recent security-related incidents in Nigeria — including the killing of General Uba, the withdrawal of soldiers from the Federal Government College Yauri in Kebbi State, and other related security occurrences.
The Senate leadership will meet with President Tinubu to brief him on the resolutions reached during the security deliberations.
